Race Overview: A Class 3 event at Wincanton that challenges seasoned chasers and promising novices over a 2 mile, 4 furlong course, testing speed and stamina.
Key Contenders:
Dibble Decker is clearly finding his stride over fences, notably after the addition of cheekpieces. He secured a pair of 2-mile 4-furlong handicaps at Huntingdon and posted another solid effort with a fifth-place finish at Ludlow over 23.8 furlongs. Expect Dibble Decker to be a strong contender.
Another Crick, a course winner, ended last season with a victory in an 8-runner handicap chase at Warwick over 20 furlongs on good to soft ground. With a 5-pound rise in the ratings, Another Crick remains a formidable contender.
Go Steady enjoyed a successful previous season, securing handicaps at distances of up to 2 miles and 6 furlongs at Lingfield and Stratford. The veteran is back for the new season and is certainly in the mix.
Stormy Flight previously won at Taunton in February and put up a decent performance, finishing third in a handicap here after a five-month break. Expect him to give a good account of himself.
Huelgoat displayed significant improvement over fences last year, achieving a quick-fire 4-timer at Newbury. He has put up credible efforts in defeat, including a fourth-place finish in a handicap hurdle at Worcester over 20 furlongs. He shouldn’t be underestimated in this discipline.
Midnight Midge, a three-time winner last season, may have appeared rusty after an 8-month break when finishing last at Exeter over 19.2 furlongs. However, he is likely to improve with this run under his belt.
Dreaming Blue opened his chase account at Doncaster but struggled with his jumping in a handicap at Kempton. If he can improve his fencing, he retains the potential to perform well.
Volkovka, a fairly useful hurdler, has shown promise in this sphere, including a strong second in a handicap chase at Ludlow. She appears well-weighted for her reappearance.
Alto Alto showcased improved form when winning a handicap at Plumpton but finished last in his subsequent start. He will be looking to bounce back after the break.
Ede’iffs Elton has shown a liking for this course and ended the last season with a solid fourth-place finish in a 3-mile Kempton handicap. He is worth considering back here.
Betting Tip:
Dibble Decker, trained by Tom Lacey, has been steadily improving over fences and recently landed a pair of 2-mile 4-furlong handicaps at Huntingdon. He followed up with a solid fifth-place finish at Ludlow, showing his potential in this distance range. With cheekpieces on, Dibble Decker is expected to be much respected on his return to the track
ITV Racing Tip: Dibble Decker

Race Overview: A prestigious Grade 2 race at Wincanton, the “Rising Stars” Novices’ Chase showcases up-and-coming chasers ready to make their mark in national hunt racing.
Key Contenders:
Captain Conby, a useful hurdler, made a winning start to his chasing career at Killarney over 17 furlongs on good to soft ground last month. While he finished second in a higher-grade contest at Tipperary, he still commands respect for his recent performance over fences.
Doyen Star won both of his outings over hurdles last season, displaying fairly useful form when winning a novice race at Chepstow over 16 furlongs on good ground. While this is a challenging debut over fences, Doyen Star is worth monitoring in the betting market.
Givega won all three of his completed starts over hurdles last season and was well-supported before being pulled up due to a broken blood vessel in the Imperial Cup at Sandown. He faces a stiff test on his chasing debut in this Grade 2 event.
Knappers Hill, who won three of his six starts over hurdles last season, put up a personal best when taking the Select Hurdle at Sandown on his final start. He posted a promising second on his chase debut at Chepstow over 19.5 furlongs on heavy ground and is considered the one to beat.
Opening Bid, a fairly useful chaser, secured his fifth win of the season when winning a 4-runner handicap at Exeter over 19.2 furlongs on good ground just 30 days ago. However, he faces a tougher challenge in this Grade 2 event.
Lady Adare, a three-time winner over hurdles, made a successful transition to chasing when winning a 7-runner novice race at Worcester over 20 furlongs on soft ground just 30 days ago. She may have more to offer over fences but faces a much stronger field here.
Betting Tip:
The Boodles “Rising Stars” Novices’ Chase promises to be a fiercely competitive affair. The standout contender and the one to beat is Knappers Hill, trained by Paul Nicholls, who showed great promise on his chase debut at Chepstow. Currently priced as the favorite at 5/4, Knappers Hill’s impressive form over hurdles and a strong start to his chasing career make him the horse to watch in this Grade 2 contest.
While the competition is tough, Knappers Hill’s potential and recent performance make him our top pick for this race.
ITV Racing Tip: Knappers Hill

Betting Tip
In the Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Wentworth Stakes, consider an each-way bet on Sophia’s Starlight. This useful filly with five wins this year finished a close second in a Newmarket listed race. While her wide draw may not be ideal, she’s hard to fully discount and offers each-way value.
ITV Racing Tip Sophia`s Starlight
Race Overview: A longstanding fixture at Wincanton, the Badger Beer Handicap Chase is a premier handicap race that tests the jumping prowess and endurance of seasoned chasers.
Key Contenders:
Frodon, a grand servant, defied top weight to win this race last year. He delivered numerous smart efforts in defeat throughout the season and is known for his front-running style. If he can establish a good rhythm at the head of affairs, Frodon is likely to make a bold bid to defend his crown.
Sam Brown showed signs of rejuvenation with first-time blinkers when looking the likely winner of a 3-mile handicap at the Punchestown Festival in April until falling 2 out. In this race, the blinkers are left off on his first outing since, and his recent form suggests he could be competitive.
The Big Breakaway is back to his best, recording good second-place finishes in valuable handicaps at Haydock and the Welsh National at Chepstow at the end of 2022. After a break, he’s looking to bounce back from a pulled-up performance in the Ultima at Cheltenham and a fall in the Grand National.
Threeunderthrufive, a dual Grade 2 winner as a novice chaser, ended last season with a good fourth-place finish in the Scottish Grand National at Ayr. He has undergone wind surgery and is much respected off an unchanged mark on his reappearance. The Paul Nicholls yard has a strong record in this race.
Courtland thrived during the summer, completing a hat-trick before finishing an excellent second in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen. He resumed winning ways at Worcester over 23 furlongs in August but found the Old Roan at Aintree a tougher test. This race marks his first venture over 3 miles+.
Ashtown Lad took well to the National fences when winning the Becher Chase at Aintree last December. While he placed over hurdles on his next two starts, his campaign ended on a low note when pulled up in the Topham at Aintree in April.
Certainly Red is a likeable sort who completed a hat-trick last season, with victories at both Wincanton and Sandown. He faced tougher competition from a higher mark when finishing seventh in the bet365 Gold Cup on his final outing but has been eased 2lb since. His course record and capability when fresh make him a respected contender.
Ballygrifincottage looked promising as a recruit to chasing, winning at Haydock last November. However, he pulled up in his two subsequent starts last season and finished a remote last of three on his reappearance at Newton Abbot last month. The addition of first-time cheekpieces and a tongue tie will be interesting to watch.
Gustavian belatedly got off the mark as a chaser in a 3-runner contest at Exeter over 3 miles in February. He was in the process of running creditably when coming down 2 out at Uttoxeter three weeks later. This marks his return after a break.
Blackjack Magic adapted well to chasing last season, winning small-field handicaps in the mud at Exeter and Uttoxeter. While he faced some jumping concerns in a more competitive race in between, there’s potential for improvement this season.
Forward Plan impressed over fences last season, with two wins around 3 miles at Southwell and a good second in an Ayr novice handicap. However, he is 7lb wrong at the weights on reappearance, which will require a career-best performance.
Betting Tip:
In the 62nd Badger Beer Handicap Chase at Wincanton, our betting tip is to consider Frodon as the standout selection. Frodon, the defending champion in this race, has a remarkable track record and defied top weight to win last year’s edition. With an official rating of 158 and Bryony Frost in the saddle, he looks set to make a bold bid to retain his crown and is currently priced as the favorite at 10/3.
While Frodon is the top pick, this is a competitive race with several strong contenders, including Threeunderthrufive, Sam Brown, and The Big Breakaway
ITV Racing Tip: Frodon

Revived in 2003 after a long hiatus, the Grand Sefton was once a cornerstone of Aintree’s autumn meeting. Today, it continues to captivate audiences with its blend of history and thrilling equestrian competition.

Race Overview: A high-caliber hurdle race, the Elite Hurdle at Wincanton presents a swift and technical challenge for competitors over just under 2 miles. The Elite Hurdle, a Grade 2 National Hunt hurdle race at Wincanton, England, is a spectacle of equestrian skill and agility. Open to horses four years old and up, it runs over 1 mile and 7½ furlongs, where eight hurdles stand between the contenders and victory. Inaugurated in 1992 and originally held at Cheltenham, the race found its home at Wincanton two years later. It’s a test of speed and precision, drawing an enthusiastic crowd each November to witness a thrilling part of the early jump season.
| Year | Winner | Age | Weight | Jockey | Trainer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | Knappers Hill | 6 | 11-02 | Harry Cobden | Paul Nicholls |

| 2019 | Fusil Raffles | 4 | 11-03 | Daryl Jacob | Nicky Henderson |
| 2018 | Verdana Blue | 6 | 10-11 | Jeremiah McGrath | Nicky Henderson |
Key Contenders:
Rubaud has been building an impressive record over hurdles, showcasing his speed with a dominant win in a 2-mile listed race at Kempton just three weeks ago. He’s the one to beat, even under a penalty, and will be looking to continue his winning streak.
Glorious Zoff is a fairly useful handicap hurdler but would be considered a surprising winner in this Grade 2 contest. He usually gives his best effort but faces a tough challenge in this class.
Hansard impressed by winning his first two starts over hurdles for this yard last winter. While he couldn’t match Rubaud in the Dovecote in February, he took a big step forward with a close performance in the Top Novices’ at Aintree. He enters this race with a clear chance based on that form.
West Balboa is a very likeable mare who followed up her victory in a grueling Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle with a win in a valuable staying Aintree handicap on Grand National day. While she’s open to further improvement, this race might be too sharp for her, and her trainer’s first preference seems to be the 3.20 Aintree race.
Sacre Coeur has been well-suited by front-running tactics, winning a couple of handicap chases this autumn. However, she has plenty to find in terms of class in this race, and her chances of winning appear limited.
Betting Tip:
In the JenningsBet Elite Hurdle, the standout contender and our betting tip is Rubaud. Trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Harry Cobden, Rubaud is in excellent form, having dominated a listed race at Kempton on his return. Despite carrying a penalty, Rubaud is the clear favorite at odds of 8/11, and his speed and recent performance make him the one to beat in this Grade 2 contest.
While Hansard is a strong contender with a clear chance based on his Aintree form, Rubaud’s current form and reputation as the favorite make him the top pic
ITV Racing Tip: Rubaud

Key Contenders:
1. Brewin’upastorm (IRE)
2. Millers Bank
3. West Balboa (IRE)
Betting Tip:
In the BoyleSports Acca Boost On Horse Racing Hurdle, Brewin’upastorm stands out as the smart performer in the field. He has a National Spirit Hurdle win under his belt and is likely to make a bold bid to repeat his previous success in this race.
ITV Racing Tip: Brewin’upastorm

Race Overview: Commemorating Richard Barber, this mares’ handicap hurdle at Wincanton is a tribute to the legacy of one of racing’s greats, with a challenging course over 2 miles, 5½ furlongs.
Key Contenders:
Ilovethenightlife is a scopey mare who raised her game when switched to a handicap, winning a Grade 2 race at Newbury over 20.5 furlongs in March. While she had a less successful run at Cheltenham afterward, it’s possible that she can bounce back on her return.
Space Voyage adapted well to hurdling last season, completing a hat-trick of wins in small-field novice events at Ludlow over 21.2 furlongs. However, she ran poorly on her chasing debut at Worcester last month but has since undergone a breathing operation, which might help her perform better in hurdles.
Plenty Of Time is a lightly-raced winning hurdler who made a successful return after an 11-month absence when winning a 2-mile, 4-furlong handicap chase at Wincanton last month. Her form switch back to hurdles can’t be discounted.
Lime Avenue was an impressive bumper winner on debut at Chepstow and followed it up with a stylish victory in a C&D novice hurdle. With more to offer after a wind operation, she’s considered a strong player in this contest.
Vicki Vale was a convincing winner on her hurdles debut in November and resumed her winning ways in a 5-runner novice at Taunton over 16.5 furlongs six months ago. Having undergone breathing surgery, she steps up in trip for her handicap debut and is firmly in the mix.
Great Snow landed a maiden at Ludlow over 3 miles in February and recorded three good placed efforts thereafter for her previous trainer. She makes her yard debut/return in this race and commands respect.
Good Look Charm is a dual hurdles winner from early 2022 and showed similar form over fences last season despite some jumping issues. She reverts to timber for her reappearance, and while she can’t be discounted, she will need to improve her jumping.
Ostrava Du Berlais was a fair maiden hurdler/chaser in France and changed hands for €30,000 in November 2022. Starting out for the Venetia Williams yard after a 12-month absence, she’s an intriguing contender in this race.
Betting Tip:
In the JenningsBet Richard Barber Memorial Mares’ Handicap Hurdle, it’s a closely-contested affair with several contenders. However, Paul Nicholls’ mare, Lime Avenue, stands out as the one to watch. Lime Avenue demonstrated her ability with a convincing victory in a C&D novice hurdle and has undergone a wind operation, suggesting there’s more to come.
Vicki Vale, who has undergone breathing surgery since her last success, is another strong contender, along with Plenty Of Time, Ilovethenightlife, and Space Voyage. This is a fascinating and competitive contest,
