2023 Wimbledon Championships: An Exciting Start to the Grand Slam Season
Introducing the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, the third major tennis tournament of the year, taking place at the renowned All England Lawn Tennis Club. This esteemed occasion guarantees captivating matches and fierce rivalry between the finest players on the global stage. Within this piece, we aim to offer you a preview of the first day’s timetable and showcase notable matchups. Let us delve into the schedule for day 4 of the Wimbledon order of play.
The 2023 Wimbledon Championships will kick off on Monday, July 3rd, marking the start of the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. As the players descend on the All England Lawn and Tennis Club, the Wimbledon order of play for day 4 has been confirmed, promising an exciting line-up of first-round matches.
Match of the day: Murray v Tsitsipas
Andy Murray’s dominance remains unchallenged in the opening round of Wimbledon, as he continues to maintain an impeccable record of 15 wins and no losses. This recent victory against his compatriot Ryan Peniston further solidifies his standing. After experiencing consecutive defeats against Alex de Minaur and Holger Rune in London and the Hurlingham Exhibition respectively, Murray’s stellar performance at Wimbledon was precisely the kind of start he needed.
Having already clinched back-to-back challenger titles at Surbiton and Nottingham, Murray has achieved an impressive tally of 11 wins on grass this year. This marks his best record on this surface since 2016 when he triumphed in all 12 matches during the grass swing, including capturing his second Wimbledon title.
Over the years, the two-time former Wimbledon champion has celebrated some of the most remarkable moments of his career at this renowned venue. Although his unbeaten streak in second-round matches here was recently broken in the 2022 tournament, when he fell to John Isner in four sets.
Since the ATP Finals in 2016, Murray has struggled to secure victories against top-5 players, with only one exception. Remarkably, he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas, one of the sport’s elites, in a grass event in Stuttgart last year.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, despite narrowly avoiding an early departure from Wimbledon, showcased his ongoing struggles and lack of confidence throughout his recent match against Dominic Thiem. The hard-fought encounter required five sets and lasted nearly four hours before Tsitsipas emerged victorious. It is worth noting that Thiem has not been at his best lately, suffering defeats against players like Pedro Martinez and Stefano Travaglia in recent weeks.
Throughout the grass swing, Tsitsipas has displayed an average performance in every match, even when facing considerable underdogs. Notably, four out of his five official matches on this surface have extended to the maximum number of sets, resulting in losses against Richard Gasquet and Yannick Hanfmann.
Tsitsipas’s track record at previous tour-level events, such as Stuttgart, Halle, and Mallorca, demonstrates his inability to progress beyond the second round. The last time he participated in four or more tour-level events without securing consecutive victories dates back to 2019 when he was still relatively new to the main tour.
Head-to-head, Murray and Tsitsipas are tied at 1-1. Although Murray’s fitness may be questioned as he appears to be past his prime, Tsitsipas faces a significant challenge on Murray’s preferred surface, which also enjoys the support of the home crowd.
Alexander Zverev v Gijs Brouwer
Alexander Zverev’s Wimbledon preparations were neither extraordinary nor disappointing. He breezed through the semifinals in Halle without dropping a set, showcasing his prowess on home soil where he was a runner-up in 2016 and 2017. Recently, he clinched a hard-fought three-set victory against Jiri Lehecka at the Hurlingham Exhibition.
Though Zverev hasn’t had a breakthrough year, he has consistently improved since his return from injury in January. He reached the semifinals in his last three tournaments, including the French Open where he fell to Casper Ruud, the eventual runner-up.
Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam where Zverev hasn’t reached the quarterfinals. However, he boasts a strong first-round record (5-1) and his best showing was reaching the round of 16 in 2017 and 2021.
Gijs Brouwer faced tough opponents in the qualifying rounds, preparing him for the main draw clash with Zverev. Brouwer has shown promise in limited tour-level appearances, winning five out of seven first-round matches, including a straight-sets victory over Adrian Mannarino at the US Open.
Their head-to-head is 0-0. Brouwer has the potential to be a threat on grass, but Zverev is the overwhelming favorite due to Brouwer’s recent poor form.
Daniil Medvedev vs Adrian Mannarino:
Daniil Medvedev faced a tough challenge in the opening round of Wimbledon against Arthur Fery, but emerged victorious in straight sets. Despite losing his serve in the first two sets, Medvedev displayed improved control in the third set to secure a 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 win. While Wimbledon has been the only Grand Slam where Medvedev has yet to reach the quarterfinals, he has never given his opponents an easy victory in this tournament. All of his previous four main-draw losses at Wimbledon came in grueling five-set battles, including a match against Adrian Mannarino in 2018.
Medvedev has enjoyed an impressive streak of 15 consecutive victories after the second round at Grand Slam events since 2017. In contrast, Mannarino seeks to build on his recent successes during the grass swing, having reached the quarterfinals twice and the final in Mallorca. Although Wimbledon is Mannarino’s favored tournament due to his affinity for grass, he has never progressed beyond the round of 16 in his 14 appearances, experiencing five second-round exits.
With Mannarino leading the head-to-head 4-2, including a win on grass, he poses a significant threat to Medvedev. However, Medvedev’s relatively fresher physical state could provide him with a slight advantage in this best-of-five sets encounter. As these formidable opponents meet once again, fans can anticipate a compelling battle at Wimbledon.
