2023 Wimbledon Championships: An Exciting Start to the Grand Slam Season
Greetings and welcome to the illustrious 2023 Wimbledon Championships, the third major tennis tournament of the year, hosted at the renowned All England Lawn Tennis Club. This distinguished occasion guarantees riveting games and fierce rivalries featuring the globe’s finest tennis stars. Within this piece, we shall offer a sneak peek into the schedule for the tournament’s opening day and spotlight some noteworthy clashes. Let us now delve into the Wimbledon day 3 order of play timetable.
The 2023 Wimbledon Championships will kick off on Monday, July 3rd, marking the start of the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. As the players descend on the All England Lawn and Tennis Club, the Wimbledon order of play for day 3 has been confirmed, promising an exciting line-up of first-round matches.
Match of the day: Djokovic v Thompson
Novak Djokovic extended his Grand Slam winning streak to 66 matches, comfortably defeating Pedro Cachin 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 at Wimbledon. Djokovic typically uses early-round matches to find his rhythm. He had a similar victory in the French Open first round, winning 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 against Aleksandar Kovacevic. Djokovic overcame challenges in past Wimbledon editions and aims for an eighth title, equalling Roger Federer’s record. Jordan Thompson’s remarkable comeback against Brandon Nakashima sets up a second-round clash with Djokovic. Thompson’s grass form and Djokovic’s dominance make it unlikely for an upset. Their head-to-head record is 0-0.
Match of the day: Sinner v Schwartzman
In their previous encounters, Jannik Sinner has maintained an unblemished record against Diego Schwartzman, leading the head-to-head tally 3-0. Moreover, in none of their previous meetings did the Italian concede more than four games in a set, showcasing his dominance over the Argentine. With Sinner’s recent triumph at Wimbledon, where he sailed through the first round, he seems to have regained his momentum after a brief setback due to fitness issues. On the other hand, Schwartzman has been gradually rebuilding his form and confidence, but he still faces a tough challenge against the resurgent Sinner. The former world number 8 is currently on a nine-match losing streak against top-10 players, including two defeats inflicted by Sinner earlier this year. Considering these factors, it is expected that Jannik Sinner will continue his commanding performance and extend his winning streak against Diego Schwartzman.
Match of the day: Rublev v Karatsev
Andrey Rublev demonstrated his resilience and determination in his first-round match, overcoming challenges to secure a straight-set victory. Despite trailing 2-5 in the second set and facing more breakpoints, Rublev’s opponent, Max Purcell, lacked the experience and composure to capitalize on those opportunities. Rublev’s ability to win matches without necessarily showcasing his best tennis has been evident throughout the year, leading to significant achievements such as winning the prestigious Monte Carlo Masters and reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open.
While Rublev has experienced second-round exits in his previous two Wimbledon campaigns, he broke the streak in 2021 by advancing to the round of 16. As for his upcoming match against Aslan Karatsev, Rublev will rightfully be considered the favorite given his current ranking and consistent results. However, he will need to elevate his performance from his previous match to face the formidable Karatsev more comfortably.
Karatsev, on the other hand, overcame a slow start to avoid consecutive first-round exits at Wimbledon. This victory also marked his first main-draw win at the tournament, rectifying his previous record. Heading into the clash, Karatsev holds a 6-8 record against top-10 players, with notable wins against fellow Russians Rublev and Medvedev.
Their head-to-head record stands at 1-0 in favor of Karatsev, who defeated Rublev in a three-setter in Dubai 2021.
