Key takeaways

  • A best bet guide is a method, not a tip: judge value, margin, bet type, bookmaker and stake before you bet.
  • A bet has value only when your honest chance estimate beats the odds' implied probability, for example 40% against 33.3% at 3.00.
  • Margins, accas and exchange commission all cost you: a four-leg evens acca wins only 6.25% of the time, and 5% commission turns 2.50 into an effective 2.425.
  • On racing, Best Odds Guaranteed pays the bigger of your price or the Starting Price, so check which bookmakers offer it before taking early prices.
  • Verify a bookmaker's licence on the regulator's public register by domain, and stake a small flat share of a bankroll you can afford to lose.

A best bet guide is a method for judging a bet before you place it: is the price fair, which bet type fits, is the bookmaker licensed, and how much should you stake? This page works through each step with real numbers, then points you to the tips, reviews and calculators on Best Bet Guide.

No guide can make betting profitable. Bookmakers build a margin into every price, so the aim is to bet with open eyes, avoid the common mistakes and keep it affordable.

What is a best bet guide?

A best bet guide combines three things: a way to assess value in a price, a way to choose a safe place to bet, and a way to control your stake. A tip tells you what to back. A guide tells you how to judge any tip, including ours.

You can compare bookmakers in our best sports betting sites guide, read daily selections in the tips sections below, and check the maths yourself with the calculators on this page.

How do you find a value bet?

A value bet is one where the chance of the outcome happening is higher than the odds imply. Convert the odds into an implied probability (the chance the price suggests), then compare it with your own estimate.

Worked example: odds of 2/1 (3.00 in decimal) imply a 33.3% chance, because 1 ÷ 3.00 = 0.333. Say you rate the selection at 40%. On a £10 stake the expected result is (0.40 × £20 profit) − (0.60 × £10 loss) = +£2. If your honest estimate is only 30%, the same bet is (0.30 × £20) − (0.70 × £10) = −£1, so you pass.

The hard part is the estimate, not the arithmetic. Most bettors overrate favourites they like and teams they follow, so write your reasoning down before you look at the price.

Odds converterConvert fractional, decimal and American odds and see the implied chance.

Implied chance–

How does the bookmaker’s margin change your best bet?

The margin (or overround) is the built-in edge that makes a bookmaker’s implied probabilities add up to more than 100%. The lower it is, the less you give away on every bet.

Example: a two-way market priced at 1.91 on both sides implies 52.4% for each outcome (1 ÷ 1.91). Together that is 104.7%, a margin of about 4.7%. Priced at 1.80 on both sides, the same market adds up to 111%, a margin of roughly 11%.

Football match-result markets have three outcomes, so add all three. Prices of 2.10, 3.40 and 3.60 imply 47.6%, 29.4% and 27.8%, which total 104.8%. Checking the same market at two or three bookmakers is the simplest habit that improves results.

What is Best Odds Guaranteed and is it worth having?

Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) is a horse racing concession: if you take a price and the official Starting Price (SP, the final price at the off) is bigger, a winning bet is paid at the SP. If the price shortens, you keep the price you took, as Racing Post’s BOG guide explains.

Example: you back a horse at 5/1 with £10 to win. It drifts to 7/1 and wins. With BOG you are paid at 7/1, so £80 returned (£70 profit) instead of £60 (£50 profit). Had it shortened to 3/1, you would still get 5/1.

BOG usually applies to singles and often excludes multiples and ante-post bets, so check each bookmaker’s terms. It is a free edge on racing, which makes it a fair reason to choose one bookmaker over another for racing.

Should you use a betting exchange instead of a bookmaker?

An exchange lets you bet against other customers and swaps the bookmaker’s margin for a commission on your net winnings in each market. It can be cheaper, but the commission is not zero.

Betfair’s standard market base rate for UK customers is 5% of net winnings, which discounts can reduce. Back a £100 stake at 2.50 and win: the £150 profit loses £7.50 in commission, so you receive £242.50 back. That makes the effective price 2.425, not 2.50.

Compare the effective price after commission with the best bookmaker price. On short-priced favourites the exchange is often better. On big-priced outsiders, thin liquidity (few people matching bets) can move the price against you.

Which type of bet suits you?

Singles carry the lowest risk, and accumulators (accas, which combine several selections into one bet) carry the highest. Each extra leg multiplies both the potential return and the chance of losing the whole bet.

Take four selections at evens (2.00), each with a 50% chance. All four win only 6.25% of the time (0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5), yet a £10 stake would return £160 if they do. The bookmaker’s margin compounds across all four legs, which is why accas are the costliest way to bet over time.

4 questions

Answer 4 quick questions and we will match you with the bet type that fits how you like to bet.

How do you choose a bookmaker for your best bets?

Start with the licence, then check payments, withdrawal times, apps and market range. A licensed operator has to follow rules on fair terms, identity checks and safer-gambling tools, and you can verify that yourself rather than trusting a logo.

The Gambling Commission publishes a public register of licensed gambling businesses that you can search by business name, trading name, domain or account number. Match the company name and website address on the register to the footer of the site you are about to join.

Here is how the sportsbooks we have checked compare. Licence details are as recorded in our review data; read the full review before you join.

For breadth of sports and a low £5 entry point, William Hill stands out in our data. It also lists cash out, bet builder, live streaming and Best Odds Guaranteed among its features. 1xBet has the widest list of sports, but it holds an offshore Curaçao licence, which means less player protection than a UK or Irish licence.

Withdrawal speed varies more than most people expect. Spinzwin Bet’s listed 7–11 business days is far slower than the 12 hours to 3 days listed for Unibet, so check that figure before you deposit.

How do you check a bookmaker’s licence?

Check it on the regulator’s own register, not from the badge on the site. A logo is easy to copy; a register entry that matches the company name and web address is not.

Also note where the licence applies. A Gambling Commission licence covers Great Britain, while operators licensed in Curaçao or elsewhere sit outside UK protections and outside GAMSTOP, the national self-exclusion scheme. Our UKGC betting sites page is the place to start if you want the strongest consumer protection.

How it works

How to check a bookmaker's licence in four steps

  1. 1Find the footerNote the company name, licence number and regulator shown at the bottom of the site.
  2. 2Open the registerGo to the regulator's public register directly, for Great Britain the Gambling Commission.
  3. 3Search by domainSearch the website address, company name or account number rather than only the brand name.
  4. 4Confirm status and scopeCheck the licence is active, covers the activity you want and that the domain is listed.
Use the regulator's own register, never the badge on the bookmaker's site.Source: Gambling Commission public register · Best Bet Guide

How should you use free bets and bonuses?

A free bet is a stake the bookmaker gives you, and with most offers the stake itself is not returned with winnings. A £10 free bet at 3.00 is worth up to £20 profit, not £30.

Since 19 January 2026, Gambling Commission rules cap wagering on bonus funds at 10 times the bonus and ban promotions that tie one product to another, such as “bet on sport, get casino spins”. Under the cap a £10 bonus can require at most £100 of bets. The cap binds Great Britain licensees only, so an offshore site can still ask for far more.

Whatever the licence, read the terms for eligible markets, minimum odds, expiry dates and any wagering requirement. Our free bets page shows current country-specific offers, and the free bet profit calculators guide shows how to work out what an offer is really worth.

How much should you stake?

On a £500 bankroll, that is £5 to £10 a bet.

Staking by the Kelly formula shows why small is sensible. For the 40% estimate at 3.00 earlier, full Kelly is (2 × 0.40 − 0.60) ÷ 2 = 10% of your bankroll. That is £50 of £500 on one bet, and if your 40% is really 33%, the edge vanishes. Because your estimates will be wrong, flat staking at a fraction of that is far safer.

Increasing your stake after a loss is the most common way recreational bettors turn a bad run into a serious problem. Our betting tools include a staking planner.

What are the most common betting mistakes?

The most common mistakes are comparing bonuses instead of prices, building accas out of habit, chasing losses, trusting unverified tipster records and ignoring terms. Each one is avoidable with the checks above.

  • Judging a bookmaker by its welcome offer. A better price on the markets you bet every week is worth more over a season.
  • Backing accas by default. The four-leg evens acca above wins 6.25% of the time.
  • Taking early racing prices without BOG. If the horse drifts, you miss the bigger price.
  • Raising stakes after a loss. Set the stake before you bet and keep it.
  • Joining on a badge. Verify the licence on the register.

Where can you find daily tips on Best Bet Guide?

Our tips are organised by sport, so you can go straight to the one you follow. Use them as a starting point and run each through the value check above.

Treat any tipster’s record with caution unless every selection is logged with the odds available at the time. Ask whether results are shown at the price you could actually get, not at the best price that appeared afterwards.

Your next steps

Work through the checks in order: estimate the chance, compare the price and margin, choose a bet type, confirm the licence, then set a stake you are comfortable losing. If a bet fails any step, leave it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best bet guide for beginners?

A good beginner's guide teaches you to read odds, understand implied probability and margins, choose a licensed bookmaker and set a fixed stake. This page covers each step with worked examples.

How do I know if a bet is good value?

Convert the odds to an implied probability (1 divided by the decimal odds) and compare it with your own estimate. If your honest estimate is higher, the bet has value; if it is lower, skip it.

What does Best Odds Guaranteed mean?

On horse racing, a winning bet is paid at the bigger of the price you took and the Starting Price. It usually applies to singles, so check the bookmaker's terms.

How can I check whether a bookmaker is licensed?

Search the regulator's public register by company name or website address and confirm the status is active. For Great Britain, that is the Gambling Commission's register of gambling businesses.

How much of my bankroll should I stake on one bet?

Whatever you choose, keep it consistent and never raise it to recover losses.

Can a best bet guide guarantee profit?

No. Bookmakers build a margin into every price, so no guide or tipster can promise winnings. A guide helps you avoid costly mistakes and bet within your means.
