Where will all the eyes be?

This year, there is a clear anticipation for the final match-up, centering around Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. With the absence of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal from the scene, a fresh rivalry has blossomed between these two players, resulting in a series of remarkable matches.

Novak Djokovic was looking unstoppable with easy wins and dominant tennis but he needed to come from 2 sets down to win in 5 against Djere, Carlos Alcaraz on the other hand has had an easy time so far but dropped a set to Dan Evans and its starting to get tougher and tougher. Seeds have started to fall with Khachanov, Ruud, Rune, Tsitsipas and Musetti all out of the tournament already.

US Open Day 7 Best Bets and Tennis Predictions

Here are our US Open Day 7 Tennis Predictions:

Tommy Paul’s performance in recent months hasn’t been particularly impressive, but it hasn’t been fully exposed yet at the US Open. Consequently, he has advanced to the second week of the tournament for the first time in eight attempts. In his earlier matches, he dropped a set against the world #233 Stefano Travaglia in the first round and two sets against the inconsistent Roman Safiullin. In his most recent third-round match, his opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina didn’t appear to be at his best mentally and physically, yet Paul managed to drop a set.

Although Tommy Paul has encountered ongoing challenges in demonstrating his top-level tennis skills in recent months, it’s essential to recognize his notable success on hard courts in 2023. His impressive record of 25 victories versus just nine defeats has propelled him to a career-high ranking of #13 in the ATP rankings. Furthermore, he was involved in two closely contested matches against the world #1, Carlos Alcaraz, in the lead-up to the US Open. He secured a victory at the Toronto Masters and suffered a loss in three sets at the Cincinnati Masters.

This will mark the second time this year that the former Boys’ French Open champion has reached the second week of hardcourt Grand Slam tournaments. He achieved this at the Australian Open in January, where he defeated two fellow Americans, including Ben Shelton, before facing the eventual champion, Novak Djokovic, in the semifinals.

He boasts an impressive record against left-handed opponents throughout his career, having emerged victorious in 47 out of the 64 matches he has played against them. Furthermore, he is currently on a five-match winning streak against left-handed players, a streak that began with his triumph over Ben Shelton at the Australian Open.

Ben Shelton didn’t have the smoothest start to his US Open campaign as he lost the first set to Pedro Cachin in the first round. However, he has found his rhythm and played well since then. In the second round, he defeated the former champion Dominic Thiem, who unfortunately retired after losing the first set. In the third round, Shelton dominated the former Australian Open semifinalist Aslan Karatsev.

The young American has accumulated the majority of his points this year from just two Grand Slam tournaments. Between his quarterfinal run at the Australian Open in January and his current performance at the US Open, he struggled to secure consecutive victories in any of the tour-level events he entered.

Shelton won his first-ever match against a top-20 player, dominating Casper Ruud at the Cincinnati Masters last year. However, he has failed to replicate that success since, having lost seven consecutive matches against them, with six losses coming so far in 2023.

Head-to-head: Tommy Paul leads 1-0. Tommy Paul deserves to be considered the favorite in this matchup due to his superior all-around game and the previous result he achieved against Ben Shelton in Melbourne eight months ago. However, it’s worth noting that Paul’s current form hasn’t been outstanding, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Ben Shelton manages to pull off an upset.

Prediction: Tommy Paul v Shelton Over 38.5 Games @ 1.85 (US Open Day 7)

Adrian Mannarino is consistently a challenging opponent to overcome due to his unique playing style, making it a significant accomplishment for Frances Tiafoe to have cleared that hurdle without requiring a deciding set. This was especially relieving for Tiafoe, considering he lost the first set and found himself trailing 2-4 in the fourth set. It was unquestionably his toughest match of the campaign thus far, as he had dominated his previous two opponents, defeating the wildcard entrant Learner Tien and the tournament main-draw debutant Sebastian Ofner in straight sets.

Another reason for Frances Tiafoe to feel relieved about this victory against Adrian Mannarino is that it finally broke his frustrating streak of third-round exits in Grand Slam tournaments this year. He had faced similar setbacks at the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon, all ending in the third round. Overcoming this hurdle was particularly crucial for him during this fortnight because he has significant points to defend in New York, which is different from the other three Grand Slam events.

The 25-year-old is set to make his fourth consecutive second-week appearance at the US Open, a remarkable feat when compared to his performance in all other three Grand Slam tournaments combined, where he has only managed two such results. He had experienced back-to-back round-of-16 exits from this tournament in 2020 and 2021. However, he put an end to that streak last year with a stunning victory over Rafael Nadal on his way to the semifinals.

The talented American has indeed discovered a newfound level of confidence and consistency in his game, thanks to some significant results he achieved in the latter half of 2022. Encouragingly, he has become a more reliable performer this year. In 2023, he has only suffered one defeat out of 11 matches against players ranked outside the top 100. That lone loss occurred against the former world number three, Milos Raonic, at the Toronto Masters.

Rinky Hijikata’s impressive performance of conceding only a single set in his opening two matches was a crucial factor when he faced off against his opponent Zhizhen Zhang in the third round. Zhang, who had been playing consecutive five-set matches, seemed to have depleted more of his energy reserves. In this 50-50 contest, Hijikata had more stamina left, which ultimately worked in his favor. As expected, Hijikata comfortably emerged as the victor in this encounter, marking his career-best result in Grand Slam tournaments.

The Australian has displayed flashes of his talent on a few occasions since making his breakthrough on the main tour a year ago. This impressive run, bolstered by favorable circumstances, has now propelled him to make his debut in the top 100 rankings and attain a new career-high ranking of #81 in the live rankings.

On Sunday, the player ranked #110 in the world will aim for his first-ever victory against a top-10-ranked opponent. In his prior three encounters with such players, he came up short, managing to win only a single set against Rafael Nadal at the US Open in 2022.

Head-to-head: 0-0. When considering the caliber of opponents Frances Tiafoe has faced in the round of 16 at previous Grand Slam tournaments, including Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev, and Felix Auger Aliassime, his upcoming match appears to be one of the easier challenges he has encountered at this stage of a major. It’s expected that he will capitalize on this favorable situation and continue to make progress at his home slam.

Prediction: Hijikata v Tiafoe Over 33.5 @ 1.85 (US Open Day 7)

Taylor Fritz got exactly what he needed in the first week of the US Open – some relatively straightforward opportunities to secure quick wins and compensate for the extra time and energy he expended in the warm-up events. So far in this campaign, he has won all nine sets he has played against Steve Johnson, Juan Pablo Varillas, and Jakub Mensik. What’s even more impressive is that he didn’t allow his opponents to win more than two games in any of those sets.

Thanks to his smooth journey in the first week of the US Open, the world #9 has achieved his best result at his home slam. This marks the third Grand Slam tournament in which Fritz has reached the second week, a feat that had consistently eluded him until last year.

The American #1 is still enjoying a favorable situation in New York, especially considering his next opponent in the quest for a spot in the quarterfinals. This opponent has endured more than 16 hours on the court to secure a place in the round of 16, which is a remarkable 11 hours longer than the time Fritz needed to reach this stage.

The winner of the 2022 Indian Wells Masters has consistently excelled on American hard courts in recent years. His achievements in these favorable conditions have been a key factor in maintaining his top-10 ranking. Prior to the US Open, he participated in seven hardcourt tournaments in the USA this year, reaching at least the quarterfinals in all of them. He converted two of these successful runs into titles in Delray Beach and Atlanta.

Dominic Stricker’s advancement to the round of 16 in his debut appearance in the main draw at the US Open may not be considered a shocking outcome due to his evident high potential. However, the manner in which he achieved this feat has certainly caught the attention of many. Winning six consecutive matches as a qualifier, which included back-to-back five-setters against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Benjamin Bonzi, is a remarkable accomplishment for someone who has faced fitness-related challenges throughout his career.

The 21-year-old is the first player from Switzerland to reach the second week of a Grand Slam since his idol Roger Federer did so at Wimbledon in 2021. With this achievement, he is guaranteed to make his debut in the top 100 rankings by the end of the US Open. He had come close to reaching this personal milestone a couple of times earlier this year but has now secured it with his outstanding performance in New York.

The former Boys’ French Open champion had never secured a victory against a top-10 player prior to his encounter with Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round of the US Open. On Sunday, he will strive to make his first quarterfinal appearance on the main tour since mid-2021 when he reached that stage in his first two outings on the main tour in Geneva and Stuttgart.

Head-to-head: 0-0. Dominic Stricker can force tiebreakers and remain competitive for a set or two, but Taylor Fritz is expected to eventually figure out how to break down his fatigued opponent.

Prediction: Stricker to win a Set against Fritz @ 1.85 (US Open Day 7)
