Where will all the eyes be?

This year, there is a clear anticipation for the final match-up, centering around Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. With the absence of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal from the scene, a fresh rivalry has blossomed between these two players, resulting in a series of remarkable matches.

Novak Djokovic so far has looked unstoppable with easy wins and dominant tennis, Carlos Alcaraz on the other hand has not been tested yet but will be on court today. Seeds have started to fall with Khachanov, Ruud, Rune, Tsitsipas and Musetti all out of the tournament already.

US Open Day 5 Best Bets and Tennis Predictions

Here are our US Open Day 5 Tennis Predictions:

Tommy Paul staged an impressive comeback after losing the first two sets to Roman Safiullin in the second round of the US Open. This victory was particularly significant as it marked the first time the 26-year-old secured a win after trailing by two sets.

Paul’s recent performance, especially since transitioning from hard courts in the first half of the season, has been somewhat inconsistent. However, he has shown resilience during this challenging phase, coming close to winning his first grass title at Eastbourne and nearly defeating world #1 Carlos Alcaraz in consecutive weeks during the North American swing.

Despite not delivering consistently exceptional results, Paul has demonstrated tenacity on hard courts throughout the season (24/9). He achieved a personal best in major tournaments by reaching the Australian Open semifinals and secured notable victories at tournaments like Acapulco (finalist) and the Toronto Masters (semifinalist), which propelled him to a career-high ranking of #13 in the ATP rankings.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina surprised many with his improved focus and effectiveness at the US Open. He managed to avoid the errors that had troubled him in the past and dispatched opponents like Marcos Giron and Juan Manuel Cerundolo in straight sets.

Davidovich Fokina has gained a reputation for engaging in roller-coaster five-set matches at Grand Slam events, but this marks the first time he has progressed to the third round of a major tournament without dropping a set.

While Paul made his inaugural third-round appearance at the US Open in 2022 after six attempts, he has reached this stage twice in his last four visits and advanced further on both occasions, defeating Cameron Norrie and Daniel Elahi Galan in third-round matches in 2020 and 2022, respectively.

Head-to-head: Tommy Paul leads 2-0 (1-0 in slams, R2 at the Australian Open 2023). Paul, known for his reliability and consistency, also benefits from playing at home. However, his recent uneven performance has narrowed the gap between the two players, giving Alejandro Davidovich Fokina a fair chance in this matchup.

Prediction: Davidovich Fokina to beat Tommy Paul @ 2.10 (US Open Day 5)

Frances Tiafoe has been cruising to victories in his current US Open campaign, facing minimal resistance. He asserted his dominance in matches against wildcard entrant Learner Tien and US Open main-draw debutant Sebastian Ofner. With a 35/17 record in 2023, he is just one win away from matching his entire tally of 36 wins from 2022. That year was significant for him, as he secured several significant victories that reshaped his career.

Tiafoe has maintained a perfect record in the third round of the US Open (3-0), achieving his best-ever performance at this level during the last edition of the tournament in 2022. He had a remarkable run, defeating Rafael Nadal and Andrey Rublev in successive matches before falling to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a gripping five-set semifinal encounter. This run in New York last year injected him with renewed confidence and belief.

Despite having a successful 2023 season with two ATP titles, Tiafoe has followed a distinct pattern in Grand Slam events – faltering in the third round. He was stopped by Karen Khachanov at the Australian Open, Alexander Zverev at the French Open, and Grigor Dimitrov at Wimbledon.

Adrian Mannarino managed to avoid a third second-round exit from Grand Slam events this year and achieved his best result at this level in 2023 by overcoming Fabian Marozsan. This victory was hard-fought, as he dropped the first set and faced a break deficit in the second, but his experience helped him turn the situation around.

Mannarino’s quarterfinal achievements on outdoor hard courts since the start of the 2020 season have been exclusively in the United States, including a title win in Winston Salem last year. However, he has faced challenges in finding success at the US Open, with his best result being reaching the third round on four occasions.

Head-to-head: Tied at 1-1. Adrian Mannarino can be a tricky opponent, and Frances Tiafoe has faced difficulties in overcoming the third-round hurdle in Grand Slam tournaments this year. Nevertheless, Tiafoe’s improved game and increased confidence over the past 12 months suggest that he will find a way to overcome this challenge.

Prediction: Mannarino v Tiafoe Under 37.5 Games @ 1.85 (US Open Day 5)

This year has marked a positive turn for Chinese tennis, following a couple of challenging years due to COVID-19 constraints. Yibing Wu initiated this change by becoming the first Chinese player to clinch an ATP title in Dallas back in February. Following his success, Zhizhen Zhang achieved several significant milestones. He became the first-ever Chinese player to reach the quarterfinals at the Masters level in Madrid a few months ago. Additionally, he achieved their first-ever win against a top-5 player, upsetting Casper Ruud in the second round at the US Open.

Zhang also holds the distinction of being the first player from China to progress beyond the second round on multiple occasions at a Grand Slam. He achieved this feat at the French Open earlier this year, where he put up a determined battle against the eventual runner-up, Casper Ruud.

Rinky Hijikata faced a formidable challenge in his debut US Open campaign in 2022, drawing Rafael Nadal in the first round. However, this time, he’s received more favorable circumstances. His first-round adversary, Pavel Kotov, entered this tournament with limited preparation on hard courts. Furthermore, his second-round opponent, Marton Fucsovics, is presently struggling with fitness concerns that impede his consistent success at this level.

Ever since securing his maiden victory in the main draw of tour-level events in August 2022, the 22-year-old Australian has exhibited steady advancement on the main tour. His performance at the US Open has effectively ensured his debut within the top 100 rankings.

Head-to-head: Tied at 1-1. This presents a significant opportunity for both players, perhaps one of the most accessible paths they’ll encounter to progress into the second week of a Grand Slam. Both players have showcased their capacity to triumph in this matchup, yet in this specific scenario, Rinky Hijikata has a slight headstart due to being well-rested.

Prediction: Hijikata to beat Zhang @ 2.30 (US Open Day 5)
