Judge BTTS tips by building a separate scoring case for each team, not by one team's big attack.
Use home and away splits and note the games behind every percentage: 75% can be just three matches out of four.
A quick estimate is chance A scores times chance B scores, but treat it as a filter that rules bets out, not a forecast.
To profit at odds of 1.80, your own estimate must beat 55.6%, because the margin is already in the price.
FBref no longer has xG since January 2026, so use Understat, FotMob, SofaScore or similar and stick to one provider.
BTTS tips are only worth following if you can test them yourself: does each team have a realistic route to a goal, and does the price pay enough for the risk? BTTS stands for both teams to score, and this guide gives you a repeatable way to judge any pick, whether it comes from a tipster, a stats site or your own idea.
Most people stop at “both sides score a lot”. That is the weakest part of the process. The useful work is checking each team separately, using data that goes beyond the scoreline, and comparing your estimate with the odds. For the wider process, see our guide to judging a bet before you place it.

BTTS Yes wins when both teams score at least once. A 1–1 draw or a 3–2 win qualifies, while a 2–0 win does not, because one side failed to score.
BTTS No wins when at least one team finishes without a goal, including a 0–0 draw. The market ignores who wins and how many goals are scored in total. Most bookmakers settle it on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so extra time and penalty shootouts normally do not count. Always read the market rules at your bookmaker.
That is why a strong favourite can be a poor BTTS Yes pick. A side that wins 3–0 week after week has a big attack, but it also shuts the other team out.
How do you assess BTTS tips? A five-step check
Judge a BTTS tip by building two separate scoring cases, testing them against venue and sample size, checking chance quality, adding match context and only then looking at the odds. Skip any step and you are leaning on a single headline number.
For each fixture, write down the case for Team A scoring and the case for Team B scoring. One strong attack does not make the other side score. For BTTS No, name the team you expect to be shut out and give a reason, such as poor chance creation or an opponent that rarely concedes.
Scoring record: goals scored per match, and how often the team fails to score.
Defensive record: goals conceded per match, and how often the opponent keeps a clean sheet. Frequent clean sheets weaken a BTTS Yes case.
Chance quality: shots and expected goals, covered below.
Context: team news, tactics and likely game state.
Price: your estimated probability against the odds.
If the evidence for either team scoring is thin or contradictory, pass. No bet is a decision, and often the right one.

Why do home and away form and sample size matter?
Compare the home side’s home record with the away side’s away record, not both teams’ overall numbers. Overall figures hide big venue differences: some teams create plenty at home and look harmless on the road.
Sample size matters just as much. When we checked FootyStats’ Manchester City page, it showed a 2026/27 BTTS rate of 75% at home and 50% away, with 63% overall. Those figures imply roughly four home and four away matches, so “75% at home” means three games out of four. A percentage that comes from that few matches is a pointer, not a trend.
Write down how many games sit behind every percentage, and check which opponents they came against. A scoring run built against weak defences may not survive a well-organised side.
How can you turn two scoring chances into a BTTS estimate?
A rough starting estimate is the chance Team A scores multiplied by the chance Team B scores. Treat it as a first pass only, because goals in a match are not fully independent: an early goal changes how both sides play.
Here is an illustration with made-up teams. The home side has scored in 8 of its last 10 home matches (80%). The away side has scored in 6 of its last 10 away matches (60%).
Starting estimate: 0.80 × 0.60 = 48%.
Adjust for the opponent: if the home side’s opponent today concedes less than most, trim the 80%. If the away side faces a leaky defence, raise the 60%.
Compare with the price: BTTS Yes at 1.80 needs 55.6% to break even, so 48% is a pass.
The same figures would make BTTS No at 2.00 (break-even 50%) look closer, since your estimate for No is 52%. Even then the edge is two points, which is inside the error of this method. Use the estimate to rule bets out far more often than to rule them in.
Which stats help most: xG, xGA and BTTS trends?
Expected goals (xG) gives the most useful extra layer. It rates the quality of each chance, and Opta’s explanation of xG describes it as the likelihood a chance is scored, based on similar past shots. Expected goals against (xGA) does the same for chances a team allows.
Compare xG and xGA with real goals to spot teams that are running hot or cold. As a snapshot, OddAlerts’ 2026/27 Premier League xG table showed Nottingham Forest with 6 goals from 13.79 xG after eight matches, while Chelsea had 17 from 10.74. A goal tally alone would have misled you about both clubs. Those figures change weekly, so check the live table.
Treat xG as evidence, not a forecast. Different providers use different models, so numbers from two sites will not match, and xG says nothing about a striker’s finishing or a goalkeeper’s form.
Where can you find BTTS stats and tips worth using?
Use a stats site for the numbers and treat tips as a shortlist to test. The table below sets out what each source is good for.
Finding fixtures to research, not a replacement for your own check
FBref used to be the free default for xG, but Sports Reference’s announcement confirmed its advanced data provider ended access in January 2026, and xG came off the site. FBref now works as a historical archive of basic stats, so an older guide that points you there for xG is out of date.
What match context can change a BTTS pick?
Team news, tactics and likely game state can overturn a clean-looking statistical case. Check lineups before you bet, because a missing striker or first-choice centre-back changes both sides of the market.
Absences: a missing main scorer lowers that team’s scoring chance. A missing goalkeeper or centre-back raises the opponent’s.
Tactics: a deep, compact setup limits space, even against a strong attack.
Game state: an early goal can open a match or push the leader to defend. Think about how each side responds when ahead and behind.
Stakes: end-of-season matches, cup ties and two-legged games often change how open teams play.
Lineups usually appear about an hour before kick-off, and odds can move once they do. If your pick depends on one player, wait for confirmation rather than betting early.
How do you check whether BTTS odds are value?
A BTTS pick is value only when your estimated chance is higher than the chance the odds imply. To convert decimal odds to implied probability, divide 1 by the odds: 2.00 implies 50%, and 1.80 implies 55.6%. Our football match odds explained guide covers the basics.
Take a worked example. Suppose a bookmaker offers BTTS Yes at 1.80 and BTTS No at 2.00.
Those add up to 105.6%. The extra 5.6% is the bookmaker’s margin.
Remove the margin by dividing each figure by 1.056. The market’s margin-free view is about 52.6% Yes and 47.4% No.
That margin-free figure shows what the market believes. It is not your break-even point. To profit over time at 1.80, your own estimate for Yes has to beat 55.6%, because the margin is already in the price.
If you estimate 58%, the expected return on a £10 stake is (0.58 × £18.00) − £10 = +£0.44. If you estimate 54%, it is (0.54 × £18.00) − £10 = −£0.28. A 54% estimate looks better than the market’s 52.6%, yet it still loses money at this price. An edge of a few percentage points is also well inside the error of any estimate, so be honest about how precise yours is.

Prices also differ between bookmakers, and a move from 1.80 to 1.90 lowers your break-even from 55.6% to 52.6%. Compare a few before you bet, using our UK betting sites page if you are in the UK.
How do BTTS combinations change the maths?
BTTS and win needs both teams to score and your chosen team to win. BTTS and over 2.5 goals needs both teams to score and at least three goals in total, so a 1–1 draw fails even though BTTS lands.
Never multiply the odds of the parts in your head. The outcomes overlap, so the combined chance is not simply two likelihoods stacked. A 2–1 win satisfies BTTS and over 2.5, but a 3–0 win satisfies only the goals line. Estimate the chance of the full set of conditions, then compare that with the combined price.
The combined probability can never be higher than the weakest single condition. If your BTTS case is shaky, adding a second condition makes the bet harder to win, not better. Use our betting tools to see how returns and odds change.
What are the most common BTTS mistakes?
The most common mistake is backing BTTS Yes because both teams have high BTTS percentages, without checking who they played. The others are mixing xG from different providers, betting before lineups are out, and treating a short winning run as proof.
Using season-long numbers for a changed team: a new manager or an injured striker makes old percentages stale.
Ignoring the price: a likely outcome at 1.50 can still be a poor bet.
Chasing: raising your stake after a miss turns a research problem into a bankroll problem.
Keep a record so your BTTS tips improve
Log each pick with the teams, your estimated probability, the odds, the reason and the result. A short run of wins or losses cannot tell you whether your method works, but a record of reasoning shows which checks you skip and where you overrate your own estimates.
BTTS stands for both teams to score. BTTS Yes wins if each side scores at least once, and BTTS No wins if at least one side fails to score.
Does BTTS include extra time?
Most bookmakers settle the market on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so extra time and penalty shootouts do not normally count. Rules can differ, so check the market terms at your bookmaker.
Is BTTS the same as over 2.5 goals?
No. BTTS needs both teams to score, while over 2.5 needs three or more goals in total. A 3–0 win lands over 2.5 but not BTTS, and a 1–1 draw lands BTTS but not over 2.5.
How many matches should I use to judge a BTTS rate?
Use as many relevant matches as you can, and treat five or six games as weak evidence. Split the sample by home and away, and note the strength of the opponents.
Where can I find xG stats for BTTS research?
Understat covers xG and xGA for the big five European leagues, and sites such as OddAlerts, FootyStats, FotMob and SofaScore publish xG too. FBref no longer shows xG. Stick to one provider when comparing teams, because models differ.
Are BTTS tips from tipsters reliable?
A tip is an opinion until you have checked it. Test each team's scoring case and compare your probability with the odds before you bet.
