Key takeaways

  • American football betting centres on moneyline, point spread, game totals, props and futures such as the Super Bowl winner and MVP.
  • A standard spread priced at -110 on both sides carries about a 4.8% bookmaker margin, and long parlays multiply that margin: four -110 legs pay 13.28 when a fair price would be 16.00.
  • Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for 14 February 2027 at SoFi Stadium, with the regular season ending on 10 January 2027.
  • Position-specific awards can offer better value than MVP: Jahmyr Gibbs was the +280 Offensive Player of the Year favourite but around +4000 for MVP.
  • Choose a licensed site with competitive spreads, Cash Out and quick withdrawals, and check overtime rules before betting.

American football betting means staking on NFL games (and college football) through markets such as the moneyline, point spread and game totals, plus season-long bets such as the Super Bowl winner or MVP. This guide explains how each market settles, how to read American odds, and where the 2026-27 season stands.

The Seattle Seahawks are the reigning champions after beating the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX on 8 February 2026. Prices in this article are snapshots from mid-October 2026, not live odds, so always check the current price with your bookmaker.

How does American football betting work?

You pick a market, take the price on offer and the bet settles on the final score, including overtime in most markets. The six you will see most are moneyline, point spread, handicap, game totals, player props and touchdown scorers.

Market What you are backing Illustrative line Wins when
Moneyline Which team wins Team A -200, Team B +170 Your team wins, by any margin
Point spread A team to cover a points margin Team A -6.5 at -110 Team A wins by 7 or more
Alternative spread (handicap) A line you choose, at an adjusted price Team A -10.5 at +130 Team A wins by 11 or more
Game total (over/under) Combined points by both teams Over 47.5 at -110 48 or more points are scored
Player prop A player’s stat line Over 74.5 rushing yards The player reaches 75 yards
Touchdown scorer Which player scores Anytime, first or last Your player scores as specified

The lines above are invented to show the format, not real prices. Each market is explained below.

Moneyline: who wins the game

A moneyline bet is a bet on the winner and nothing else. Because there is no margin to cover, favourites are short: a team at -200 (1/2 in fractional, 1.50 in decimal) needs to win roughly two games in three to break even.

Point spread: the main NFL market

The point spread is a handicap that levels out a mismatch. Back the favourite and they must win by more than the spread; back the underdog and you win if they win outright or lose by less than the spread.

Whole-number spreads can end in a push (a refunded stake). At -7, a 7-point win is a push, while at -6.5 it is a win. The half point matters because NFL scores cluster around 3 and 7, so bettors call these “key numbers” and prices are set carefully around them.

Game totals, props and touchdown scorers

Totals are a two-way bet on combined points, and they do not care who wins. With a line of 47.5 the over wins at 48 or more points. Props cover individual stats such as rushing yards or sacks, and touchdown scorer markets pay out on who crosses the line, with bigger prices for first or last scorer.

Props are the easiest place to lose track of the margin. Check that the player is active, because a bet on a player who does not play is usually void, but terms vary by bookmaker.

How do you read NFL odds?

NFL odds appear in three formats: American (+550 or -110), fractional (11/2 or 10/11) and decimal (6.50 or 1.91). A plus number is the profit on a 100 stake; a minus number is the stake needed to win 100.

The standard spread price shows where the bookmaker’s margin sits. At -110 on both sides, each price implies about a 52.4% chance (110 divided by 210), so the two together add up to 104.8%. That extra 4.8% is the margin you are paying on every bet. A £10 stake at -110 (1.91 decimal, 10/11) returns £19.09 in total if it wins.

Moneylines carry the same margin. If Team A is -200 (66.7% implied) and Team B +170 (37.0% implied), the total is 103.7%. Our odds converter turns any of the three formats into the other two and shows the implied probability.

Implied chance–

Why long parlays are expensive

A parlay (the US word for an accumulator) multiplies the odds of every leg, and it multiplies the margin too. Four spread bets at -110 each pay 13.28 in decimal odds, so £10 returns £132.83. If each leg is a genuine coin flip, the real chance of all four landing is 1 in 16 (6.25%), and a fair price would be 16.00.

Use the accumulator calculator to see how returns and the break-even chance change as you add legs.

When is the NFL season and Super Bowl LXI?

The 2026-27 NFL regular season runs from early September to 10 January 2027, followed by the playoffs and Super Bowl LXI on 14 February 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Teams play 17 games across 18 weeks, one of which is a bye week, according to the 2026 NFL season overview.

The calendar matters for betting because futures prices move after every result. Playoff rounds are single games, so a team that wins its conference on spreads over a season can still go out in one afternoon.

NFL games in London

The NFL plays three regular-season games in London in 2026, all kicking off at 2:30pm UK time, according to NFL.com’s London games page. The final one, Houston Texans against Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley on 18 October, comes up this weekend. For UK bettors, these are the easiest games to follow live without staying up late.

What do NFL futures and award markets look like?

Futures are bets on outcomes decided later, such as the Super Bowl winner, a conference winner or a season award. They stay open all year, and prices shift hard on injuries and early results.

After Week 5, ESPN’s awards tracker showed these favourites:

Market Favourite after Week 5 Price Context
Regular Season MVP Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills) +250 Started the season at +600
Regular Season MVP Brock Purdy (San Francisco 49ers) +300 Started at 18-1
Offensive Player of the Year Jahmyr Gibbs (Detroit Lions) +280 Bijan Robinson and Kenneth Walker III at +400
Defensive Player of the Year Will Anderson Jr. (Houston Texans) +125 Was +500 at the start
Coach of the Year John Harbaugh (Baltimore Ravens) +600 Kevin O’Connell next at +650

Converting helps: Allen at +250 pays £25 profit on a £10 stake (£35 returned) and implies about a 28.6% chance. Anderson at +125 implies about 44.4%, which shows how strongly the market rates him.

One pattern stands out. Gibbs is the Offensive Player of the Year favourite, but DraftKings had him at +4000 for MVP, because the MVP award goes to quarterbacks far more often than anyone else. If you fancy a running back or receiver, the position-specific award is usually the better-priced market.

Super Bowl LXI odds

The Super Bowl market lists every team and updates all season until two are left. Before the season, Betfair priced the Los Angeles Rams at 11/2 (6.50). A £10 bet at that price returns £65 in total (£55 profit), and the price implies roughly a 15.4% chance (1 divided by 6.50).

Prices can move a long way. ESPN’s odds tracker shows the Houston Texans lengthening from 18-1 to 45-1 after an 0-4 start, which is why waiting for a slow start to recover can give a bigger price than backing before the season.

AFC and NFC winner odds

Conference winner bets let you back a team to reach the Super Bowl without needing it to win the game. Betcris’ Super Bowl LXI preview had the Buffalo Bills as AFC favourites going into the season. The Patriots won the AFC last year, and the Seahawks beat the Rams 31-27 in last season’s NFC Championship Game to reach the final.

The conference route is shorter-priced than the outright Super Bowl market, so the return is smaller. In exchange, you avoid the risk of backing a team to win one more game against the other conference’s best.

What should you look for in an American football betting site?

A good American football betting site is licensed for your country, prices spreads and totals competitively, and offers NFL-specific promotions, a reliable Cash Out and quick withdrawals. Games are short and swing fast, so these features matter more than in most sports.

UK customers should use a site on our list of UKGC-licensed betting sites; our best sports betting sites page compares the main options.

  • Parlay (accumulator) boosts: some bookmakers add a percentage to winning accumulators once you pass a minimum number of legs. Check the minimum odds per leg and whether the boost is paid in cash or bonus funds. Our Best Betting Offers Guide and Best Betting Bonuses pages show current offers.
  • Early payout offers: these pay a moneyline bet as a winner once your team goes a set number of points ahead, even if it later loses. The size of the lead varies, and some offers only cover certain games.
  • Cash Out: this settles a bet early for a smaller guaranteed return. The price includes the bookmaker’s margin, so treat it as risk management rather than a free exit. Partial Cash Out lets you bank some of the stake and leave the rest running.
  • Withdrawal speed: check how long a payout takes after you request it. Our guide to UK betting sites with fast payouts covers speeds, and a good betting app helps when games kick off while you are away from your desk.
  • Promotion frequency: look for specials across the whole season, not just Super Bowl week.

Do NFL bets include overtime?

Most moneyline, spread and totals bets include overtime, but three-way markets that allow a tie usually settle on the result after 60 minutes only. Regular-season overtime lasts 10 minutes and can end in a tie, while playoff games continue until there is a winner.

Read the market rules before you bet, because the same game can settle differently across markets.

Can you bet on the NFL from the UK?

Yes, if you use a bookmaker licensed by the UK Gambling Commission and are 18 or over. Sunday games usually start from around 6pm UK time and Monday night games run past midnight, so in-play betting and Cash Out are popular with UK customers. TV and streaming rights change, so check who shows games this season.

What is different about college football betting?

College football uses the same moneyline, spread and totals markets, but the gaps between teams are often much larger, so spreads of 20 points or more are common. Games are mostly played on Saturdays, and injury and depth information is harder to find than in the NFL, so be cautious with props and large stakes.

What are the most common American football betting mistakes?

  • Building big parlays first. As the example above shows, every extra leg adds margin as well as risk.
  • Ignoring injury reports. NFL teams publish weekly injury designations (Questionable, Doubtful, Out), and lines can move several points when a starting quarterback is ruled out. Bet after the news, not before it.
  • Taking one bookmaker’s price. A line of -6.5 at one site may be -7 at another, which changes the bet completely. Compare before you stake.
  • Backing futures at the wrong time. Prices shorten fast after hot starts, as Brock Purdy’s move from 18-1 to +300 shows.

Where to start with NFL betting

Start with moneyline and spread bets on a single game, learn how prices move, and only add parlays or props once you understand the margin built into them. Use our betting tools to check returns and implied probability before you stake.

Frequently asked questions

How does point spread betting work in American football?

The bookmaker gives the favourite a points handicap, such as -6.5. You either back the favourite to win by more than that margin, or back the underdog, who wins the bet if they win or lose by fewer than 6.5 points.

What is the difference between moneyline and point spread?

A moneyline bet is simply on which team wins. A point spread bet adds a margin, so the favourite has to win by more than the spread, which brings the prices on each side closer together.

What does -110 mean in NFL betting?

It means you must stake 110 to win 100, which is 1.91 in decimal or 10/11 in fractional odds. It is the standard price on both sides of a spread or total, and it implies about a 52.4% chance for each side.

Do NFL bets include overtime?

Most moneyline, spread and totals bets include overtime. Three-way markets that allow a tie usually only count the first 60 minutes, so check the rules on each market.

When is Super Bowl LXI?

Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for 14 February 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The Seattle Seahawks are the reigning champions after winning Super Bowl LX.

What is an early payout offer in NFL betting?

It pays your moneyline bet as a winner once your team reaches a set points lead, even if the team later loses. The lead required varies by bookmaker, so read the terms.
