Tottenham keen on landing Gavin Bazunu from Southampton as Hugo Lloris replacement
Newcastle United’s future in European competitions remains uncertain, but regardless of their final standing this season, the club is already preparing for the upcoming campaign. Eddie Howe’s side is keen on strengthening their squad, and one player who has caught their attention is RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai.
According to reports from Sky Deutschland, Newcastle’s recruitment team, led by manager Eddie Howe, has expressed interest in the 22-year-old Hungarian midfielder. Szoboszlai, who has been in impressive form this season, possesses a similar playing style to Leicester City’s James Maddison, another player linked with a move to Newcastle.
Szoboszlai has been a key contributor for RB Leipzig, recording six goals and ten assists in 37 appearances across the Bundesliga and the Champions League. His versatility in various positions on the field makes him an attractive option for Howe, who has shown a preference for players with such qualities in the past.
However, acquiring Szoboszlai will not come cheap for Newcastle. The midfielder reportedly has a release clause of £61 million in his contract, which is valid until the end of the 2025-2026 season. RB Leipzig, who are expected to fight hard to retain the services of their talented midfielder, would make a significant profit if they decide to sell him, as they only paid €20 million for his services.
Earlier this month, Szoboszlai hinted at the possibility of a move, stating, “I’m definitely still with RB Leipzig for three games. I would like to play in the Champions League and would like to win my second trophy with RB Leipzig. We will see what happens after the summer.”
RB Leipzig currently sits in third place in the Bundesliga table with two matches remaining. They need just one win from their remaining games to secure qualification for the Champions League, which could play a role in Szoboszlai’s decision-making process.
Newcastle United’s interest in Dominik Szoboszlai showcases their ambition to compete at a higher level in the Premier League. While the potential £61 million price tag may seem steep, it could be considered a worthwhile investment for the club as they seek to take the next step in their development. As the summer transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen if Newcastle can successfully secure the services of the highly talented Hungarian midfielder or if other clubs will join the race for his signature.
