2:40 NEWMARKET Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 2m2f ITV
Race Overview:
The Cesarewitch Handicap is a prestigious flat handicap horse race held annually in October at Newmarket, covering a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs and finishing on the Rowley Mile. Established in 1839, the race was named “Cesarewitch,” an anglicized term for Tsesarevich, in honor of the then Russian heir Alexander, who later became Tsar Alexander II. Initially organized alongside another major handicap race, the Cambridgeshire, these two events became known as the Autumn Double.
While initially preceding the Cambridgeshire, the Cesarewitch was later rescheduled to take place two weeks after it. Only three horses have achieved the double—Rosebery in 1876, Foxhall in 1881, and Plaisanterie in 1885—and attempts have been rare since. Formerly part of Newmarket’s Champions’ Day, the race joined Future Champions Day in 2011, separated from it in 2014, and returned to the newly established Future Champions Festival in 2015.
