Day 7 Round Up
Norwegian tennis player Casper Ruud, seeded fourth in this year’s French Open, showcased his resilience and determination as he secured a hard-fought victory against Zhang in a thrilling four-set match. Ruud’s triumph marked his progress to the fourth round, building upon his impressive run in the tournament. Last year’s finalist, Ruud displayed the mental fortitude needed to overcome challenging moments on the court.
Reflecting on his performance, Ruud acknowledged the heightened pressure he faced this year compared to the previous edition of the tournament. He noted the increased attention and scrutiny from spectators, emphasizing how it altered his experience on the court. Despite this added pressure, Ruud managed to maintain his composure and deliver a commendable performance.
Zhang, the first Chinese male player to reach the third round at Roland Garros since 1937, began the match strongly, breaking Ruud in the opening game and securing the first set. However, Ruud refused to succumb to frustration, regaining his focus and determination. Overcoming a 0-40 deficit on his serve in the second set, Ruud staged an impressive comeback, ultimately leveling the match.
In the subsequent sets, Ruud demonstrated his improved form, seizing control of the match and securing victory with a confident forehand shot. With this win, Ruud propelled himself to the next round, setting the stage for further exciting encounters in the tournament.
In other matches, sixth-seeded Holger Rune comfortably defeated qualifier Genaro Alberto Olivieri in straight sets. Rune’s dominant performance showcased his prowess on the court and solidified his position as a contender in the tournament.
Yoshihito Nishioka endured a grueling battle against Thiago Seyboth Wild, prevailing in a five-set thriller. The match exemplified the competitive nature of this year’s French Open, with a significant number of matches reaching five sets.
Meanwhile, in a highly anticipated clash, 22nd seed Alexander Zverev emerged victorious over Frances Tiafoe in a four-set encounter. Zverev’s triumph dashed Tiafoe’s hopes of being the last American male player remaining in the tournament considering that Taylor Fritz was eliminated in 4 sets by Cerundolo.
