Day 4 Round Up
In an eventful day at the French Open, several notable players showcased their skills and resilience on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Sixth seed Holger Rune received a stroke of luck when Gael Monfils withdrew from their scheduled clash due to a wrist injury, granting Rune a free passage to the third round.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, amidst controversy surrounding his previous on-court actions, maintained his focus as he overcame Marton Fucsovics in the second round. Following his earlier message on a camera that sparked political tensions, the French sports minister expressed disapproval of Djokovic’s gesture and cautioned against any repetition. However, Djokovic chose a different approach after his victory, settling for a signature and a smiley face.
The match against Fucsovics proved to be a challenge for Djokovic, particularly during a challenging 87-minute first set. Nevertheless, the third seed showcased his unwavering determination and demonstrated exceptional form, ultimately securing a 7-6 (2), 6-0, 6-3 victory.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fifth seed, enjoyed a smooth journey to the third round, defeating Roberto Carballes Baena without any incident. As Tsitsipas pursues his maiden Grand Slam title, all eyes will be on Novak Djokovic, as the political dispute stemming from his actions continues to intensify.
In another captivating match, Carlos Alcaraz, the world number one, faced a formidable challenge from Japan’s Taro Daniel. Alcaraz, who had previously impressed with a dominant opening win, encountered a brief setback as Daniel took an early lead in the second set. However, the Spanish rising star quickly regrouped, delivering relentless shots from the baseline to level the contest. Alcaraz regained his focus and secured a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph, setting up an exciting encounter with 26th seed Denis Shapovalov.
