Yesterday’s semi finals were 2 tight affairs that also had rain interruptions in the middle which made it difficult for the players, yet we still managed to see 2 good matches. In the first match we saw a tipsy turvy first set with 7 breaks of serve in all between Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz. Rublev had a chance to serve out the set but didn’t close giving the opportunity for Fritz to close out the set 7-5. The Russian world number 6 came back strong in the second set dominating it and winning 6-1. Rublev was cruising but Fritz started coming back and playing better again in the 3rd only for the match to get interrupted due to rain. After the rain delay Rublev came out stronger and close the match 6-3. The second semi final also produced some drama and more rain interruptions. Jannik Sinner came out firing and looked the better player taking the first set 6-1. Weather conditions started changing and getting darker making the conditions heavier and slower which seemed to favour Holger Rune more and gave him an early break only for play getting suspended again due to rain. The match resumed in the late afternoon where the young Dane remained in the ascendency despite Sinner trying his best to fight in the less favourable conditions. Rune took the second and third sets 7-5, 7-5 booking himself a final against Rublev.
Monte Carlo Final preview.
This will be a tough match to predict and it feels like a 50/50 match despite the bookies placing Rune favourite at 1.60. The weather also can play a part as it did in the semi finals. The forecast is for a much nicer and warmer day which should favour Rublev a bit more as it will give him the chance to hit more winners with his powerful groundstrokes. Rune however has proven that he has the talent and also the variety in his game which can also help him take control of the match. I think it will be a tight match so I would back any decent overs you can find.
