Yesterday’s Final

In a stunning turn of events, Daniil Medvedev emerged victorious in the Italian Open, showcasing his newfound prowess on clay. The Russian tennis star, who has openly expressed his discomfort with the surface in the past, secured a hard-fought triumph over Holger Rune to claim the title. Medvedev’s journey in Rome was nothing short of remarkable, as he had never won a match there before. He defeated the 20-year-old Dane with a score of 7-5, 7-5, after an intense battle lasting one hour and 41 minutes.

This triumph propels Medvedev to the world No. 2 ranking, surpassing Novak Djokovic. Additionally, he will enter Roland Garros as the second seed. With this victory, Medvedev’s total number of titles on the men’s tour reaches an impressive 20, including six at the Masters 1000 level and his first on the red dirt.

This remarkable transformation comes after Medvedev’s struggles on clay, exemplified by his previous 0-3 record in Rome. Notably, just two years ago, during the same tournament, he famously expressed his disdain for clay courts. However, Medvedev’s recent success demonstrates a continuous improvement on the surface throughout the clay swing this season.

Speaking after the match, Medvedev expressed his newfound belief in himself and his desire to win the biggest tournaments. The Russian tennis star’s remarkable journey in Rome serves as a testament to his growth and determination, defying his previous aversion to clay courts.

The Italian Open final was not without its challenges, as inclement weather led to a delay. However, once the match began, Rune initially took the lead, posing tough questions to Medvedev. The Russian had to fight hard, saving break points and relying on clutch serves to gain an advantage. Ultimately, Medvedev’s resilience paid off as he secured the first set.

Rune, determined to bounce back, started the second set with a 2-0 lead. Yet, Medvedev showcased his competitive spirit, winning three consecutive games to regain control. However, a momentary setback led to another break by Rune, bringing the set to a tense 5-5. In the end, Medvedev proved to be too much for the young Dane, taking the match 7-5, 7-5, and clinching his 20th tour-level title.

This victory marked the first final in Rome since 2004 not to feature either Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic. Medvedev’s remarkable achievement serves as a testament to his growth, determination, and newfound ability to excel on clay courts. As he heads into Roland Garros, the Russian star will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with.
