Yesterday the last 16 battled it out and fought out a place for the last 16. The biggest stand out story was Zhizhen Zhang who yet again caused an upset and this time beat world number 10 Taylor Fritz in another long battle and once again from a set down. The 26 year old Chinese player ended up saving 3 Match points to eventually win 3-6, 7-6, 7-6.

The match of the day featured Carlos Alcaraz against Alexander Zverev and a battle was expected however the match ended in complete Alcaraz dominace. The Spaniard was ticking all the boxes with agressive ground strokes, impressive defending and consistency, he also showed some skills at the net as well. Zverev struggled to hit forehand winners and has had better days before, the match ended 6-1, 6-2 for Carlos Alcaraz.

Zhizhen Zhang was not the only man to cause an upset Aslan Karatsev to knock out his compatriot Daniil Medvedev who was giving the impression that he is finding his feet on clay. Karatsev won the match 7-6, 6-4. Karen Khachanov defied the odds as well again beating a compatriot in Andrey Rublev who has been one of the form players on clay this season. Khachanov gave a powerful performance to win 7-6, 6-4. Stefanos Tsitsipas seems to be improving day by day on clay since he recovered from his minor injury and provided one of the more dominant performances of the day to beat Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-3, 6-1. What stood out for the Greek was his backhand as it normally is his weaker side but improvements can be noticed on that wing. Other results from yesterday include:
D. Altmaier def J. Munar: 6-3, 6-0
B. Coric def A. Davidovich Fokina: 6-7, 6-3, 7-6
J-L Struff def P. Cachin: 7-6, 6-7, 6-3
Today’s schedule see’s the first 2 Quarter Finals on court but there are also some interesting matches in the Aix en Provence Challenger in France and here are my predictions for the day:
Alcaraz v Khachanov Over 19.5 Games
Altmaier to beat Coric
Murray 2-0 Monfils
Gakhov to Win First set v Blancaneaux
Etcheverry 2-0 Medjedovic
