Mutua Madrid started getting intense with the last 32 players left in the tournament and seeded players taking their turn. Jaume Munar after his controversial win over Kokkinakis this time had an easier win as Tallon Griekspoor retired after losing the first set giving Munar the opportunity to have his best ever Master’s 1000 tournament. Shortly after world number 4 Casper Ruud took to the court to face young Italian qualifier Matteo Arnaldi expecting a comfortable win, however here we saw one of the upsets of the the day as Arnaldi took the match 6-3, 6-4 with the Norwegian displaying some rare frustration and hitting the ball into the stadium. It wasn’t all joy for the Italians as Lorenzo Musetti got surprised by world number 108 Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 7-6 surprising everyone including the bookies. On form Andrey Rublev showed little respect of the veteran Stan Wawrinka and provided a commanding display winning 7-5, 6-4 despite Wawrinka’s efforts. For a short period we were on the brink of the biggest upset of the week as Carlos Alcaraz was stunned in the first set by Emil Ruusuvuori as he stormed to a 6-2 lead. The young Spaniard who turns 20 in 1 week showed that he is not only talented but is also mature and mentally tough as he came back to win the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Hubert Hurkacz struggled in his match against Richard Gasquet but is proving to be somewhat of a comeback guy with a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 win. Not only Alcaraz was in trouble during yesterday’s matches, even Holger Rune had a scare and needed to save a match point to progress to the next round with a 6-1, 4-6, &-6 win. The night match featured Alexander Zverev who came up with a mammoth performance to beat Roberto Carballes Baena 6-7, 7-5, 6-0. The German struggled with an injury early on and the Spaniard was making sure to make Zverev run and play as much as possible. Zverev gritted his teeth to eventually win the exciting match.
Great matches for a super Saturday today, wtih the main match being Thiem vs Tsitsipas. Here are my predictions:
Cecchinato to beat De Minaur
Watanuki to win a set Vs Norrie
Etcheverry to beat Tiafoe
Kecmanovic to beat Garin
Van De Zandschulp 2-0 Karatsev
