Another beautiful day of weather and some top level tennis to make it better yesterday at the Mutua Madrid Open. The day started off with one of the most important matches of the day, not only because we got to see Dominic Thiem continue to build on his comeback to one of the best clay courters of the last decade but also because he has now set up a mouth watering match up against Stefanos Tsitsipas which will take place Saturday. Thiem beat Kyle Edmund comfortably 6-4, 6-1. Jan-Lennard Struff had a very good win against Lorenzo Sonego showing that he is on some very good form, however the Italian would be quite disappointed with the score line as it was a very one sided one 6-3, 6-1. The biggest surprise of the day was yet another defeat for Andy Murray to Andrea Vavassori who needed to go through qualifying to arrive to the main draw. The Brit started the match out of sorts making many errors and also struggling with the heavy forehands of Vavassori eventually losing the first set 6-2. Things continued on the low for Murray as he also fell a break down in the second set. If there is one certainty when we are talking about Andy Murray its that he will fight till the end and that is what he did by breaking back and taking the second to a tie-break. The tie-break was a closely contested one and Murray once again showed fight clawing back from 5-2 to 6-6 and saving 5 match points only to eventually lose it 9-7. The Mutua Madrid Open also provided for the first ever Masters 1000 win for Bernabe Zapata Miralles who beat Mackenzie McDonald 3-6. 6-3, 7-6 and this meant the world to the Spaniard as you can see below:
