Yesterday we had a non stop day packed of first round tennis with lots of hard fought wins and an upset here and there as well! 9 out of the 16 matches played yesterday went the distance proving how intense the competition was on the faster clay courts of Madrid. Alex Molcan had a good win yesterday over Yibing Wu considering that he has been struggling with a few injuries and with a 6-2, 6-4 win over a solid player will give a lot of confidence for the coming rounds. Alexander Bublik will also feel good about himself as he showed himself that he can also concentrate and fight until the end as he did to beat Daniel Elahi Galan 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. Roberto Carballes Baena had a decisive win against David Goffin who on his day can trouble any player and a comfortable 6-4, 6-4 win proves that he is on some good form. Stan Wawrinka needed to go all the way to beat big serving American Maxime Cressy 6-7, 6-3, 7-6. The Swiss was favourite going into this match but a win over a higher ranked opponent will still give the boost necessary for the upcoming matches. Diego Schwartzman‘s fall from the ATP rankings continues with a loss to world number 128 Hugo Grenier 7-5, 6-4. Benoit Paire fought very hard in his match against Matteo Arnaldi but once again served for the match and failed to close it out and eventually losing 6-1, 3-6, 7-6. Good wins yesterday also for Emil Ruusuvuori and Richard Gasquet who beat Ugo Humbert and Martin Landaluce respectively. We also had some Tennis drama and non Tennis related drama between Jaume Munar and Thanasi Kokkinakis with the two having some disagreements with the Spaniard having the final word with a 7-6, 7-6 win.
Today we have another feast of first round matches before the seeds step out on court with the likes of Dominic Thiem, Lorenzo Sonego, Andy Murray & Dusan Lajovic all scheduled to play. Here are my predictions for today:
Thiem v Edmund Over 20.5 Games
Cecchinato to beat Fucsovics
Shelbayh to Win a set vs Cachin
Sonego to beat Struff
Murray 2-0 Vavassori
