Yesterday we witnessed a specular contest in the final of the Masters 1000 event at Monte Carlo between Andrey Rublev and Holger Rune. The 19 year old Dane had the stronger start taking a 4-2 lead only for Rublev to break back and take the match to 5 all. Rune played some aggressive tennis and broke again to close the first 7-5. Rublev responded like a champion to losing the first set and dominated most of the set and eventually won it 6-2 taking the final into a decider. Rune got the better start in the decider taking a 3-0 and 4-1 lead, also having a break point at 4-2, but Rublev was not going to lay down and fought all the way to take the set and championship 7-5! This is the Russian’s first ever Masters 1000 win after coming close in the past and was clearly emotional after his win. Congratulations to Andrey Rublev!
This week we have anther full schedule of clay court tennis on the ATP tour with an ATP 500 event at Barcelona and 2 other ATP 250s, one in Banja Luka in Bosnia & Herzegovina and the the other in Munich, Germany. All 3 events have a very competitive field with Barcelona seeing Carlos Alcaraz have his first clay court match of this season. Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner and Francis Tiafoe are some of the other stars this tournament will be enjoying. World number 1 Novak Djokovic will be playing in Banja Luka and he will be looking to improve on last week’s performance. Bosnia & Herzegovina will also host Andrey Rublev, Borna Coric and Stan Wawrinka among others. Last week’s finalist Holger Rune will be playing in Germany and will be aiming to win more match and another title. Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev will also be playing in Germany.
