Football betting odds explained in practical terms means separating the market, any handicap or total, and the price before calculating a return. American odds are especially associated with American football, while UK football commonly uses decimal or fractional odds for 1X2 home, draw and away markets.

Read the odds board from bet type to price

Read an odds entry in this order: identify the market, note the spread or total if there is one, then read the American price beside the team or selection. That sequence helps you avoid treating a handicap as though it were the price.

For example, in Team A -7 (-110), -7 is the point spread and -110 is the American odds price. Team A is the favourite in this market, and -110 shows the stake needed to make £100 profit.

For the underdog, the plus price states the profit from a £100 stake. A favourite is priced as more likely to win than its opponent, while an underdog offers more profit relative to the stake, but neither label guarantees a result.

Our Betting guides index covers football, odds, bet types and bankroll management, so it suits readers who want to understand how reading a board fits into a wider betting decision.

Calculate profit and total payout in each odds format

For positive American odds, multiply your stake by the price and divide by 100 to find profit. For negative odds, multiply the stake by 100 and divide by the absolute value of the price.

  1. Positive odds: profit = stake × odds ÷ 100.
  2. Negative odds: profit = stake × 100 ÷ absolute odds.
  3. Total payout: profit + returned stake.

Profit is the amount gained if the bet wins; total payout includes both that profit and the original stake. The £25 payout includes the £10 stake, so £25 is not the profit.

Odds format How it represents a price Example equivalent
American odds +150 means £150 profit from a £100 stake; a negative price shows the stake needed for £100 profit. +150
Decimal odds Multiply the stake by the decimal price to get the total payout, including the stake. 2.50
Fractional odds The fraction shows profit relative to the stake. 3/2

Worked example: a home win in a 1X2 market

For a familiar 1X2 example, consider a £10 home-win selection priced at +150. This is an arithmetic example, not a live match price.

  1. Calculate profit: £10 × 150 ÷ 100 = £15.
  2. Add the returned £10 stake: £15 + £10 = £25 total payout.
  3. Convert the price: +150 is decimal odds of 2.50 and fractional odds of 3/2.

At decimal odds of 2.50 and fractional odds of 3/2, the £10 selection pays £25 in total, including £15 profit.

Worked example: a negative price

For -110, £11 is one tenth of the stake needed to make £100 profit, which makes this calculation straightforward.

  1. Calculate profit: £11 × 100 ÷ 110 = £10.
  2. Add the returned £11 stake: £10 + £11 = £21 total payout.
  3. Convert the price: -110 is approximately decimal odds of 1.91 and fractional odds of 10/11.

At -110, the £11 example returns £21 in total, including £10 profit; the equivalent prices are decimal 1.91 and fractional 10/11.

Turn odds into implied probability and account for the margin

Implied probability is the chance represented by a price when converted into a percentage. For positive American odds, calculate it as 100 ÷ (odds + 100); for negative odds, use the absolute price ÷ (absolute price + 100).

This percentage is derived from the offered odds. It is not a guarantee of the outcome or necessarily the bookmaker’s precise forecast of what will happen.

The bookmaker’s margin is also called the vig or juice. When you convert every possible result in a market into implied probabilities and add them, the total can exceed 100%; that excess reflects the pricing margin, not extra real-world chance.

Overround is the total implied probability above 100%, while bookmaker margin as a share of stakes is a different measure. Keep the distinction clear when comparing prices or discussing how much a market’s prices build into the odds.

Our odds, markets and multiples guide covers odds reading, bookmaker margin, market choice and accumulator pricing, making it useful when you want to connect a price calculation with the wider market.

A higher payout can be more favourable only when the market, line and settlement terms match. Higher odds alone do not prove that a bet offers better value, because the selection may face a different handicap or a different settlement rule.

Understand moneyline, spread and over/under bets

A moneyline bet backs a team to win outright. The American price indicates the potential profit relative to the stake; whether overtime counts depends on the market’s settlement rules.

A point spread applies a handicap to the final score. With +7, the selected underdog covers by winning outright or losing by fewer than 7 points; with -7, the favourite must win by more than 7 points to cover.

An over/under bet predicts whether the combined score will finish above or below a listed total. The total is a scoring threshold, not the odds price displayed beside the selection.

Market What the bet predicts What result wins What the number means
Moneyline Which team wins outright The selected team wins, subject to the market’s rules The American price shows potential profit relative to stake
Point spread Whether a team beats its handicap The team covers its spread The spread is the handicap; the adjacent American odds are the price
Over/under Whether the combined score goes above or below a threshold The final total lands on the selected side of the line The total is the scoring threshold; the adjacent American odds are the price

Sportsbook point spreads and totals capture 86% and 79% of the variability in the median outcome, respectively, according to PLOS ONE.

Compare lines, prices and settlement rules fairly

Compare the same market first, then compare the line and price separately. A price attached to -6.5 is not directly equivalent to a price attached to -7, even if both bets back the same team.

A half-point can change the settlement. A team winning by 7 covers -6.5, but pushes at -7; a team winning by 6 fails to cover either line.

A push occurs when the final result lands exactly on a whole-number spread or total. The stake is generally returned, but the market’s rules determine how a particular wager settles.

Before comparing prices, match the market, spread or total, and settlement terms, including whether overtime counts. Only then compare the price for that equivalent wager.

Odds can move before kick-off as bookmakers change prices or lines, and they can move during play as well. A line movement changes the handicap or scoring threshold; a price movement changes the potential return at that line.

  • Confirm that you are comparing the same market.
  • Match the spread or total, including any half-point.
  • Compare settlement terms such as overtime and pushes.
  • Compare the American price only after those details match.

Read parlays, player props and futures prices

A parlay combines multiple selections, and every leg must win for the full parlay to succeed. When a bookmaker permits the combination, decimal odds multiply across the legs to show the combined price.

A player prop is a wager on an individual player’s performance, such as passing or receiving yards. The line sets the performance threshold, while the price shows the potential payout relative to the stake.

A futures bet concerns an outcome decided later, such as a team winning a competition. Its price and implied probability can change as the season progresses, so a price is not a promise about the eventual result.

Use the same reading sequence for all three: identify what must happen, note the line or threshold, read the price, and understand how the wager is settled. That keeps the selection separate from its price, even when the bet combines several outcomes.

A final odds-board check

Before placing a bet, make sure you can state what must happen to win, which line applies, how the price translates into a return, and how the market handles a push or overtime. That is the practical core of football betting odds explained: separate the selection, line, price and settlement rules, then compare like with like.
