American football betting markets explained in practical terms start with what each wager settles on: a team’s result, its margin of victory, the combined score or an event during the game. The odds show the potential return, while the market rules say what happens in cases such as overtime, a tie or a player not taking part.

How does a point spread work in American football?

A point spread gives one team a points handicap. The favourite has points deducted from its result for settlement, while the underdog has points added; the bet wins only if the adjusted score favours your selection.

A positive spread gives the team a points handicap for settlement. The bet covers if the handicap-adjusted result favours your selection.

Worked example: For an underdog spread bet, add the handicap to the team’s final score for settlement; the adjusted result determines whether the bet wins.

A whole-number spread can produce a push if the adjusted scores are level, with the stake commonly returned. A half-point spread avoids an exact tie against the line, but the market’s settlement rules still apply.

Bar chart: Spreads capture more outcome variability

Sportsbook point spreads capture 86% of median-outcome variability, compared with 79% for totals.

Source: PLOS ONE

A conventional point spread is a fixed-odds wager: the return follows the odds you accept, if the bet wins. Spread betting is different: the stake is set per point, so gains or losses vary with how far the final outcome lands from the quoted spread.

American football betting

How do moneyline bets and American odds work?

A moneyline bet backs a team to win, without applying a point handicap. The favourite has the shorter price and usually requires a larger stake for a given potential profit; the underdog has the longer price and pays more if it wins.

American odds use a plus or minus sign. A positive price shows the net profit on a given stake, while a negative price shows how much must be staked to make 100 units of net profit.

The sign can also appear beside a point spread, where it means points rather than a price. Beside a team, the sign on a spread indicates the points handicap; beside a moneyline selection, it indicates American odds.

Worked example: Alexander Kuper describes a bettor who believes the favourite will win as needing to lay $245 to win $100 net (Alexander Kuper).

Decimal odds include the stake in the return, which is why multiplying the stake by the decimal price gives the full payout. The vig, also called the juice, is the bookmaker’s margin built into its prices and reduces the return compared with a price without margin.

A moneyline market may offer a draw selection for regulation time, while another may settle on the game winner including overtime. Read the market description so you know whether a tie is a possible outcome or overtime decides the result.

How are over/under totals settled?

An over/under, or total, bet is settled against the combined points scored by both teams. Back the over if you expect the total to finish above the listed line, or the under if you expect it to finish below.

With a half-point total, the combined score cannot land exactly on the line. A whole-number total can push if the combined score lands exactly on the line, subject to the market’s rules.

Totals focus on the game’s scoring, not which team wins. A team can lose the match while an over bet wins, or win the match while an under bet wins.

What do prop bets, parlays, teasers and futures cover?

A proposition bet, or prop bet, is settled on a defined event rather than simply which team wins. Player props can cover a named player’s passing, rushing or receiving performance, while game props can cover events such as the first team to score or the method of a touchdown.

A parlay combines multiple selections into one wager. The potential return increases as winning legs compound, but every required selection must succeed for the parlay to win; a losing leg usually defeats the combined bet.

A teaser also combines selections, but adjusts selected spreads or totals by a set number of points in exchange for a less favourable price. A teaser is not the same as a parlay at its original lines, and the rules for pushes or void legs can affect settlement.

Futures are bets on an outcome decided later, such as a season champion, division winner or individual award. They are settled when the relevant competition or award outcome is decided, according to the market’s terms.

Market What decides the result What to check
Point spread The final score after the handicap is applied Whether the line is a whole or half point
Moneyline Which team wins under the market’s game-time rules Whether overtime counts or a draw is offered
Over/under total The combined points compared with the listed total How an exact tie at a whole-number line is handled
Player prop A named player’s specified statistic or event Participation and stat-correction rules
Parlay The results of all selections in the combined bet How a push or void leg affects the remaining selections
Futures A season-long or later event outcome When the market is officially settled

How do in-play betting lines change during a game?

In-play, or live, markets update as the game develops. The score, time remaining, possession and field position can all change how a spread, moneyline or total is priced.

A team that was an underdog before kick-off may become the live favourite after taking a lead. The total can also move as points are scored or time runs down, so a live price is tied to the game state when the bet is accepted.

Live markets may pause around scoring plays, reviews or other moments when the result of a play is being confirmed. Check the displayed market and price when betting resumes; the pre-pause line may have changed.

How can you compare lines and check settlement rules?

Compare both the line and the price for the same market. A spread at -3 is a different wager from -3.5 even if both show the same odds, because the half point changes which final margins win or lose.

Then compare the price at matching lines. For decimal odds, multiply your stake by the price to calculate the total return, and subtract the stake to find the profit if the bet wins.

Settlement rules can differ across markets and bookmakers, including how they handle overtime, ties, player participation, abandoned games and postponed fixtures. Before staking, read the rules for the specific market: a spread, prop and moneyline may settle differently.

Football prediction-market contracts are not identical to sportsbook wagers. A contract may be priced by the market’s participants and settled under its own contract terms, while a sportsbook displays odds for a defined bet; compare the payout structure and settlement condition, not just the displayed number.

Set a betting budget before choosing a market, and decide the stake size in advance. Our wider sports betting guide covers betting formats across sports, while our betting guides explain other common terms and calculations.

A practical way to compare American football bets

American football betting markets explained in practical terms come down to three checks: what settles the bet, what line applies and what return the price offers. Compare like with like, calculate the full return from your stake and read the rules for unusual outcomes before placing a wager.
