What a qualifying bet does and what a free bet is worth

A qualifying bet is the cash wager you place to meet an offer’s entry conditions. It can win or lose, so the full stake is at risk, but its expected cost depends on the odds and the chance you think the selection has of winning.

A free bet, sometimes called a bonus bet, is restricted betting credit rather than cash. With a stake-not-returned free bet, a winning bet pays winnings but not the bonus stake; with a stake-returned free bet, the stake is included in the payout.

That difference changes the value of an offer even when two offers show the same free-bet amount. We explain the wider range of bet types and how they work in our guide to sports betting.

A risk-free or insured offer may return bonus credit rather than withdrawable cash. The label alone does not tell you what is returned: the offer’s rules determine whether it is cash, bonus funds or another restricted credit.

Estimate the qualifying bet’s expected cost

For decimal odds, multiply the cash stake by the decimal odds and by your estimated chance of winning to find the expected gross return. Subtract that amount from the stake to estimate the expected cost, assuming the bet settles and no other conditions apply.

For a common football 1X2 bet, suppose you stake £10 on a home win at 2.0 and estimate the home side’s chance of winning at 45%. The calculation is:

  • Expected gross return: £10 × 2.0 × 0.45 = £9
  • Estimated expected cost: £10 − £9 = £1

Decimal odds of 2.0 are evens, or 1/1 in fractional odds. The 45% is your estimate, not a certainty; you could still lose the full £10 on this single bet.

The estimate is more useful than treating the qualifying stake as either free or certain to be lost. To work through returns, odds and other calculations, use the betting calculators.

Calculate what a winning free bet pays

With a stake-not-returned free bet, calculate the winning payout as free-bet stake × (decimal odds − 1). For a £10 free bet at 3.0 odds, that is £10 × (3.0 − 1) = £20 in winnings; the £10 bonus stake is not paid out.

At the same odds, a stake-returned £10 free bet would pay £10 × 3.0 = £30 in total, including the stake. The two offers have the same face value, but the payout differs by £10 because their stake-return rules differ.

The amount you can ultimately withdraw may be lower than the payout if bonus winnings have a wagering requirement, a maximum conversion limit or another withdrawal restriction. A wagering requirement means you must place further bets under stated conditions before withdrawing the affected funds.

Compare real offers by their qualifying conditions

Two listed bookmaker promotions show why the headline bonus is only one part of the comparison: the Spreadex and William Hill offers on our Premier League betting page. Each has a £10 qualifying stake, but the bonus amount and qualifying-bet details differ.

An each-way bet combines a win bet with a place bet, so it has two parts.

Fractional odds of 1/2 equal 1.5 in decimal odds. A minimum-odds rule sets the eligibility threshold; it does not make a selection safe or tell you the qualifying bet’s expected cost.

For an apples-to-apples comparison, estimate the expected cost of the qualifying stake first. Then compare the free-bet stake-return rule, eligible markets, expiry and any limit on converting winnings. Compare the conditions as well as the headline bonus; the bonus amount alone does not show its cash value.

Keep qualification separate from wagering requirements

The qualifying bet is the initial cash stake needed to meet the offer conditions. A wagering requirement or rollover applies later to bonus credit or its winnings, and may require additional betting before the funds can be withdrawn.

  1. First, estimate the qualifying bet’s expected cost from the stake, odds and your probability estimate.
  2. Then assess the rollover, including the extra turnover required and any restrictions on which bets count.

Minimum odds, eligible bet types, expiry dates and maximum-winnings rules can affect whether you earn or use an offer. Put those conditions beside the headline bonus when you compare bookmaker promotions, rather than treating the bonus amount as cash value.

A voided or cancelled qualifying bet may not count as a settled qualifying wager. The promotion’s rules determine whether it qualifies or whether you need a replacement bet.

Hedging can change the outcome, not remove every risk

Matched betting usually pairs a bookmaker back bet with an opposing exchange lay bet. The lay stake is set to offset much of the back bet’s result risk, while commission on exchange winnings reduces the return.

Here is an illustration using the £10 stake-not-returned free bet at 3.0 odds. Assume a lay bet at 2.9 and exchange commission of 2%, with both bets fully matched and no other fees.

  • Free-bet winnings if the selection wins: £10 × (3.0 − 1) = £20.
  • Lay stake: £20 ÷ (2.9 − 0.02) = about £6.94.
  • Lay liability if the selection wins: £6.944… × (2.9 − 1) = about £13.19.
  • If the selection wins, the free-bet winnings less the lay liability leave about £6.81.
  • If it loses, the lay profit after 2% commission is also about £6.81.

The calculation uses the unrounded lay stake; displayed figures are rounded to the nearest penny. It illustrates a possible conversion, not a guaranteed payout, and it does not include the separate cost of the qualifying bet.

Price movement, bet limits, unmatched lay bets, different settlement rules and market suspension can change the result. A common mistake is to treat a £10 free-bet face value as £10 cash, or to assume the full qualifying stake is certainly lost; calculate the free-bet payout and expected qualifying cost separately.

A practical way to compare the cost

For Free Bet Offers: What the Qualifying Bet Really Costs, use the same order each time: estimate the qualifying bet’s expected cost, calculate the free bet’s payout under its stake-return rule, then account for rollover, expiry and withdrawal limits. That gives you a clearer comparison than the headline bonus alone.
