Carlos Alcaraz dominated Denis Shapovalov in their match at the French Open, securing a convincing victory of 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Despite Shapovalov’s occasional flashes of brilliance, he struggled with a series of unforced errors that cost him the match.
Right from the start, Alcaraz set the tone on his preferred clay-court surface by breaking Shapovalov’s first service game. Although the Canadian showed some resilience in the sixth game, saving double match point to avoid a bagel, Alcaraz eventually closed out the set on his third set point.
Shapovalov displayed his determination in the second set, managing to stay competitive with the tournament’s top seed. However, Alcaraz’s dominance was evident as he secured two breaks to take a commanding 4-1 lead and ultimately cruised to victory. The match ended with Shapovalov hitting the ball into the net, giving Alcaraz the win on his second match point.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic faced a challenging third-round match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The match, which lasted three hours and 36 minutes, proved to be Djokovic’s longest three-set Grand Slam match in his career. Despite struggling at times, including double-faulting three times in a single game, Djokovic managed to take control when it mattered most.
The match was not without its controversies, as Djokovic faced criticism from some spectators. He expressed his disappointment with the disrespectful behavior and voiced his confusion regarding such reactions. Nevertheless, Djokovic remained focused on the game and successfully overcame the challenges presented by Davidovich Fokina.
Djokovic’s next opponent will be Juan Pablo Varillas, a relatively unknown player from Peru. Varillas, ranked 94th, had never won a Grand Slam match until this tournament, making the upcoming match an intriguing encounter.
The French Open also saw other seeded players progressing, including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Karen Khachanov, and Lorenzo Musetti. Notable upsets occurred as Lorenzo Sonego defeated Andrey Rublev, while Varillas ousted Hubert Hurkacz in a five-set thriller.
With the tournament progressing, fans can anticipate more thrilling matches and upsets as the top players continue their quest for the prestigious French Open title.
