Day 3 Round Up

On Day 3 of the Roland Garros tournament, 23-year-old Brazilian tennis player Thiago Seyboth Wild caused a major upset by defeating second seed Daniil Medvedev in the opening round of the men’s singles. This victory marks Seyboth Wild’s first appearance in the Roland Garros main draw, making it an even more remarkable achievement.

The match turned into a grueling five-setter, with Seyboth Wild showcasing tremendous resilience and determination to secure the win. Medvedev, who had recently claimed the Rome Masters title, was expected to perform well on the red clay of Paris. However, he suffered his fifth first-round exit in seven visits to the French capital, squandering a golden opportunity.

Medvedev’s post-match comments shed light on his dislike for clay courts. He attributed his loss to the unfavorable playing surface, mentioning that he disliked having clay in his mouth, shoes, and socks. His peculiar explanation left some puzzled, but it only added to the significance of Seyboth Wild’s achievement.

For the young Brazilian, this victory was a dream come true. He became only the second Brazilian men’s tennis player, following in the footsteps of Gustavo Kuerten, to defeat a top-two ranked player at a Grand Slam event in the Open Era. Seyboth Wild’s performance demonstrated that he is ready to compete at the highest level, especially on his favored clay surface. Notably, he entered Roland Garros with an impressive 32-10 record on clay this season.

Meanwhile, other players also made their mark on Day 3. Casper Ruud, last year’s runner-up, advanced to the next round by defeating Swedish qualifier Elias Ymer in straight sets. Sixth seed Holger Rune fought hard in a four-set battle against Christopher Eubanks, securing his spot in the next round with an impressive tiebreak performance.

In a triumphant return, Alexander Zverev emerged victorious against Lloyd Harris. Zverev’s victory is particularly noteworthy, considering he had to retire from last year’s Roland Garros due to an ankle injury during the semifinals against Rafael Nadal.

With Nadal’s withdrawal from the tournament, the clay-court Grand Slam seems more open than ever. All eyes will be on Zverev as he aims for a deep run, while other players like Seyboth Wild, Ruud, and Rune have shown their potential to make a splash at Roland Garros.
